EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Philippines coach Let Dimzon looks back on subpar Southeast Asian Games

Things were looking up for the Philippine women’s national football team at the start of the year when they bagged a historic qualification to the most prestigious Asian tournament, that is why many consider their recent campaign at the Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur a letdown after managing only three points out of four games.

The Philippine football WNT intended to finish the Games on the podium, and appeared to be well on their way with a triumphant start over Malaysia, prevailing 2-1. However, they went on to lose all of their other games: 0-3 to Vietnam, 0-6 to Myamar and 1-3 to Thailand. Vietnam eventually took the gold, Thailand the silver and Myanmar the bronze. The Philippine PFF Women's Cup 2015: Season Two

The Philippine PFF Women’s Cup 2015: Season Two.

The PFF Women’s Cup which serves as the Philippine Football Federation’s domestic tournament for top women’s teams in the country had just completed its run for the year a few weeks ago.

Established only last year, the biggest change in this edition is the formal transition to an 11-a-side tournament compared to the previous year’s 9-a-side. This year all teams from the very competitive collegiate league were complete for the Cup: champions Far Eastern University (FEU), Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), University of Santo Tomas (UST), University of the Philippines (UP) and lastly, De La Salle University (DLSU), who were absent last year. UP broke up to two teams for this Cup (UP-X and UP-Y), and the four other teams are semi-pro clubs Green Archers United FC (GAU FC), Sikat FC, Lady Tamaraw FC and Chelsea FC Soccer School Philippines. La Salle may have lost the final of the PFF Women’s Cup but in some ways they have won.

One of these ways happen to be a touching story involving one of its players: Irish Navaja.

The 2015 AFF Women’s Championship kicks off on 1 May 2015 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. A total of eight teams will compete for the title.

In the previous edition of this tournament, held in 2013, Japan were crowned Champions after beating Australia on penalties in the final!

Philippine Women’s National Football Team have named their squad for the AFF Women’s Championship 2015 which kicks off in May.

Philippine WNT are in Group B at the AFF Women’s Championship 2015 alongside Vietnam, Myanmar and Malaysia.

AFC Women's Asian Cup 2014 on Women's Soccer United

Australia Westfield Matildas will kick off their AFC Women’s Asian Cup title defence on Wednesday 14 May, check out the competing team’s squad lists.

The top five teams out of the eight teams competing in the Asian Cup will get spots in the World Cup. Therefore becoming one of the four semi-finalists by being the top two teams in the group will automatically secure the ticket to the World Cup along with the winner of the fifth-place match.
