Algarve Cup 2018 | Final’s Day!

Another fantastic edition of the Algarve Cup is nearing its end as we head in to the Final’s Day on Wednesday 7 March to decide the 2018 Standings.

Contesting this year’s Final is Sweden and the Netherlands who both topped their groups (B and C respectively) with 7 points. Also finishing on 7 points was Australia Westfield Matildas who narrowly missed out due to goal difference.

Sweden has won the Algarve Cup on three previous occasions, (1995, 2001 and 2009), the Netherlands have never won… yet. The highest finish the European Champions have recorded at this competition is 5th place.

The 3rd place play-off match will feature Australia and Portugal. The hosts, have had their best ever Algarve Cup appearance, even before the match for third place starts, Portugal has already secured the best classification of its history in the Algarve Cup. Their best finish previously was 8th place which they earned in the 2004 and 2009 editions.

Algarve Cup 2018 | Day Three, Group stage

Day three at the 2018 Algarve Cup and it’s the final round of group matches in Portugal.

Hosts Portugal have had a great tournament campaign so far, with a 2-1 comeback against China in their opening game and holding Australia to a goalless draw in their second – this has put them on 4 points the same as Australia at the top of group A. Just 1 point behind sits Norway ahead of China who are yet to earn a point.

Similarly in Group B, Korea Republic and Sweden lead on four points, with Canada close behind on three points, whilst Russia are bottom with no points. Korea Republic face a tough challenge in their final game of this round when they take on Canada.

The European Champions, Netherlands have had a dream tournament campaign so far in Group C with two wins from two including a 3-2 win against Denmark, a Euro 2017 Final rematch! Despite their opening game defeat in which they conceded six goals, Japan find themselves second in the table on three points. Denmark and Iceland both have one point heading into the final round of group matches with the Danish facing Nadeshiko Japan and Iceland taking on Netherlands.

Canada beats Russia 1-0 in second Algarve Cup group stage match.

Canada came away with a 1:0 victory in its second group stage match of the 2018 Algarve Cup after featuring a different lineup from its opening match.

Algarve Cup 2018 | Day Two, Group stage

The 25th edition of the prestigious Algarve Cup continues today with the second round of group matches.

In the opening matches of the 2018 Algarve Cup the hosts Portugal came from 1-0 down to beat China PR 2-1 in Group A. In the other Group A match, Australia and Norway put on a thrilling 7 goal display in which Australia won 4-3 in injury time. Both Group B matches ended 3-1 in favour of Korea Republic and Sweden over Russia and Canada respectively. Group C saw the European Champions, Netherlands thrash Japan 6-2. Among matchday two’s action is a rematch of the UEFA Women’s Euro 2017 Final as Netherlands and Denmark face each-other in Group C!

Canada Women’s National Team fall 3-1 to Sweden in its opening match of the 2018 Algarve Cup

Canada WNT fell 3:1 in its opening match of the 2018 Algarve Cup. Playing in its first match since November’s home and away international friendly matches against USA and Norway, Canada controlled large parts of the game and demonstrated creativity throughout, but Sweden succeeded in capitalising on defensive errors to defeat the Canadian side.

The score line remained 0-0 until the dwindling minutes of the first half when Sweden jumped on a loose ball in a scramble in front of Canada’s net and put the ball past a sprawling Stephanie Labbé. Read the rest of this entry →
