USWNT Aims to Complete Two-Game Sweep of Korea Republic in Cary, N.C.

USWNT Aims to Complete Two-Game Sweep of Korea Republic in Cary, N.C.

The USA Women’s National Team has played 13 matches in 2017 and is set to play three more during the fall as this year’s schedule nears completion, with one match remaining against the Korea Republic on Oct. 22 at Sahlen’s Stadium (2 p.m. ET on ESPN).

USWNT will then play two games in November against Canada. The USA is coming off a 3-1 victory against Korea on Oct. 19 in New Orleans as Julie Ertz, Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe scored. It was the fourth goal of 2017 for Ertz, the team-leading fifth for Morgan (who has scored in four consecutive WNT matches) and the third of the year for Rapinoe, who tallied twice in the Tournament of Nations during the summer. The 16 games the USA will play this year will tie for the second-most the U.S. WNT has played in a calendar year after the World Cup-Olympic cycle. The only year in which the USA played more (18) was in 1997 during what was part of the lead-up to the 1999 Women’s World Cup hosted in the USA. The October matches against an improving South Korea team are a part of a 2017 schedule that will see the USA play top teams from every Confederation except Africa. The USA is 10-3-0 in 2017 with all three losses (two by 1-0 scores) coming to teams ranked third, fourth and sixth in the world. Read the rest of this entry →

Mo Marley names England squad for international friendly against France

Mo Marley, England Women’s interim head coach, has named a 24-player squad for next week’s international friendly against France.

The match will take place at Stade du Hainaut in Valenciennes on Friday 20 October, kick-off 8pm.

This is Mo Marley’s first squad announcement since she took over from Mark Sampson who was sacked as England women’s national team head coach the day after the Lionesses’ 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifier against Russia.

Mo Marley has taken charge of England under the role of interim head coach for the next three matches, which includes the international friendly against France, and World Cup qualifiers against Bosnia and Kazakhstan.

Marley made the move up from her position in charge of the England Under-19 side where the UEFA Pro Licence holder and former England captain has enjoyed success including guiding England to win the UEFA European U19 Women’s Championship title in 2009.

The only change in Mo Marley’s squad from the recent one that beat Russia 6-0 in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019 qualifier is the absence of Karen Bardsley and Ellen White (through injuries) and Laura Bassett who is club-tied to Australia Westfield W-League side, Canberra United.

France and England recently met during the UEFA Women’s EURO 2017 Championship in which England won 1-0 to secure their first win over France in 43 years. Read the rest of this entry →
