Crisp Cambridge go to town on Luton

September 10, 2014 in England FAWPL, Match report, News

Cambridge women's football club

Cambridge picked up their third win in the space of a week as they moved up to 3 rd in the FAWPL South East Division One with a hard fought 2-0 win at home to Luton Town Ladies.

Both teams had played midweek fixtures and the opening quarter of an hour of the game had a sluggish feel to it but it was the hosts that settled into the game quickest and created a number of chances to score. The first corner of the game saw a well-worked set piece from Becky Russell find Jordan Holland’s head but she directed the header wide of the far post. Unfortunately for her, she landed awkwardly and had to be substituted, with Caitlin Marks coming on in her place. Read the rest of this entry →

NORWICH CITY LADIES 1-3 CAMBRIDGE WOMEN
04/09/14

Cambridge returned from a potentially tricky midweek evening fixture at Norwich with their first three league points of the season.

Laura Bright and Nuala Wayne had already sent snap shots wide but after a spell of sustained Cambridge pressure, Wayne opened the scoring after 18 minutes. An underhit goal kick was intercepted by Wayne and she sent an early shot back at goal and an awkward bounce in front of the keeper saw it hit the back of the net. Norwich equalised within a minute however after they won a free kick outside the box in the left channel. The Norwich player stepped up and curled a superb effort into the top far corner. Nicola Goeghan was unlucky not to head home a Becky Russell free kick but right in the stroke of half time, Wayne gave Cambridge the lead with a thunderous 30 yard effort high into the goal. Cambridge Women book their place in the next round of the FA Women’s Premier League Cup

September 4, 2014 in England FAWPL, Match report, News

Cambridge WFC

Cambridge Women booked their place in the next round of the FA Women’s Premier League Cup with a confident display against Cheltenham Town Ladies.

The hosts however got off to the worst possible start when with less than a minute on the clock, a long ball over the top of a napping back line, saw Kim Hewlett race onto the ball and slot past keeper Liz Pamplin, despite her getting a hand to the shot.

The home side’s reaction was good though and enjoyed spells of possession in the first half and stayed patient, probing the Cheltenham’s defence to work on openings. Millie Turner and Becky Russell in particular were being used to good effect in wide areas. Nuala Wayne tested the Cheltenham keeper Ashleigh Lebbon on two occasions but Cambridge’s defending needed to be committed to prevent the visitors from extending their lead. Jordan Holland made a superb block inside the area to block a goalbound shot from Rhona Donaldson and the centre back was also alert to head away just as Hewlett was about to attack a Jen Brown-Wealls cross.
