Canada to play Olympic Champion Germany in April

As Canada Soccer’s Women’s National Team gear up for the Bronze Medal Celebration Match against Mexico in Vancouver 4 February, Canada Soccer is already planning for its next match, announcing the team will play Olympic gold medalist Germany in Erfurt, Germany on 9 April 2017.

Canada and Germany clashed twice at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, with Canada winning the first encounter in its third group stage match 2-1, and Germany edging out Canada in the semi-final to play Sweden for gold while Canada went on to defeat Brazil in the bronze medal match.

Canada’s come-from-behind group stage win over Germany, its first-ever result against the European champions, continues to feature in the public’s memory of the Rio Games and for Head Coach John Herdman, it’s his favourite moment of the tournament. Read the rest of this entry →

Among the 16 nations taking part are debutants Andorra and Kosovo.

Orlando Pride Acquire Rights to Forward Rachel Hill from Portland

Orlando Pride has acquired the rights to two-time MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist Rachel Hill from Portland Thorns FC.

In exchange for the forward, the Thorns receive Orlando’s natural first- and fourth-round picks in the 2018 NWSL College Draft.

“Rachel was a player we scouted heavily and rated very highly going into draft day,” Orlando Pride Head Coach Tom Sermanni said. “While we weren’t able to trade up to draft her, we’re happy we were able to make this deal work to bring another goal-scoring option to the roster.” Read the rest of this entry →

Canada Soccer honoured in annual CONCACAF awards

Canada Soccer honoured in annual CONCACAF awards

Canada Soccer’s Women’s National Team and head coach John Herdman have been honoured with the CONCACAF Outstanding Performance Award after a return to the podium in back-to-back Olympic Football Tournaments from 2012 to 2016.

Five other Canadians were also honoured across the 2016 CONCACAF Awards, with notably Carol Anne Chénard winning CONCACAF Female Referee of the Year honours. Atiba Hutchinson was named to the CONCACAF Male Best XI while Kadeisha Buchanan, Ashley Lawrence, and Christine Sinclair were also named to the CONCACAF Female Best XI for 2016. Forward Alex Morgan and Goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris Win CONCACAF Awards

The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) announced today that Alex Morgan is the 2016 CONCACAF Female Player of the Year and Ashlyn Harris is the CONCACAF Female Goalkeeper of the Year as winners in twelve different categories for the annual CONCACAF Awards were revealed.

In an equally-weighted vote among Men’s and Women’s National Team coaches and captains of all the Member Association, media and fans, Morgan captured the award for the second time. Bryan Ruiz of Costa Rica earned the honor for the first time. Harris (Orlando Pride) won the award for the first time.

U.S. midfielder Tobin Heath (Portland Thorns FC), the 2016 U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year, finished second in the voting while U.S. forward Crystal Dunn (formerly of the Washington Spirit and now Chelsea Ladies FC) finished third. Read the rest of this entry →
