Womens Soccer United

Four articles (3 French, one US) the day after the last matches of the Olympics tournament.

L'Equipe article : "LA FRANCE EN QUATRIEME TRISTESSE"
Explanation of the word-play : the usual expression is "... en quatrième vitesse" (in fourth gear / at full speed), here it means "... in full sadness".

The playing field must be level. My preference would be for the rest of the world to improve the sports-facilities at their universities. That would not be so hard for football because it is fairly cheap. If you check out the swimming facilities at universities like Stanford and Arizona, you see immediately why USA dominates the swimming pool, Manaudou sister and brother in all honour ...

@Lars - Hmmm... WC and Olympics without USA maybe ? After all, they play Soccer, not Football...

In the world cup the last 4 were the same except that Sweden were in Canada´s place.  It does not make sense to continue with the Olympics being a repeat of the WC. It makes a nonsense of the competition. The problem is that because the USA college/university system is so strong, making the competition U-23 like for the males, would make it a free pass to the gold for the USA -- and that applies to all ages below 23 years. It is a nightmare.

   Any ideas, Gromit?

Football is the most popular sports in the world. It is played absolutely everywhere, in streets, beaches, fields, backyards, cities, villages. There are more countries affiliated at FIFA than at UN.

It is because small kids have been playing and practising football in townships that South-African football exists. It is because poor kids play football in favelas and on beaches that Brazilian football has always been great. And you want to concentrate football in Universities or favour them ? And you complain that Women's Football is practised by "middle class" ?  Do you want a ladies Football practised only by students destined to become professionals ? What about the others ? Those who can't go to colleges and universities ? "Sorry, ladies, Football is not for you. Be highly educated first. You can't ? Too much poor ? Social problems ? So sad. Too bad. Professional football/soccer won't be for you. You don't belong to the polished world , made by and for the rich." Is that your vision of universal football, Lars ? It's definitely not mine !

What is the primary question, Gromit? To my mind it does not make sense to rerun the WC the next year. It makes a nonsense of being World-Champion.

The men avoid this by making the Olympic soccer an U-23 event (with 3 older players).

The problem for the ladies is that (at least at the moment) American college soccer is so strong that a U-23 (or U-22, 21 etc) would be an unequal playing field. The sports facilities even in fairly ordinary American universities are out of this world. This dominance stops at about 22-23 years of age, when NCAA is over and the vast majority of these women go on with their careers.

A full scholarship at the top soccer universities like Stanford and Duke are worth $40k or more a year. One gigantic carrot + the advantage of being a student at these fabulous institutions. The girls buckle down to get even a partial scholarship.

The Brazilians were taken apart and found wanting today at Wembley. Zilch. Nada. Useless. The Brazilian men have done nothing since 2002; their ladies have never won anything of significance. Their female star played in Sweden.

The primary question remains. The Olympic tournament added no value. France still came fourth. Canada replaced Sweden -- one icehockey playing nation for another -- and USA and Japan traded places. Who is best in the world? Is it Japan or is it USA? We can be sure that it is not France.

With a good refeering, we would have had a Japan-Canada Final and your agument would have failed through.
The problem you evoke is due mainly because Olympics is on WC's following year. Let's put the WC a year before or a year after and it could change everything. Or not. SO what ? If Japan and Usa are the best teams in the world (please, don't forget Germany), well, they are.
I don't have any problem with that. I doubt I'll have as much thrills and high-quality football with U-20 WC in some weeks than I had with those Olympics matches.
And what will you say next 8th september if the U-20 WC gives us a Final between USA and Japan with Canada vs Germany in SF ? "Oh no ! Not again !"

Athletics WC has the same athletes competing than in Olympics. It's always Jamaica vs USA. Will you ask to change things by asking to have only "U-I don't know what" to avoid to see Bolt beating Blake or Gatlin again and again ?

But, actually, that's not the problem you raised and I answered to in my former post.

Your points are well taken, Gromit. I imagine that the reason is organisational and relates to qualifying and not colliding with the men´s tournaments.

Icehockey plays a worldchampionship every year including Olympic years, which figure skating also does, so maybe it has to do with skates and ice?

Biathlon has a yearly world championship except in Olympic years. X-country and Alpine skiing have WC either side of the Olympics. These sports essentially use the same venues for their circuit of competitions each year and men and ladies compete at the same time, and there is no qualifying. The Athletics world championship was introduced to break the fake amateur status. In all these sports, the Olympics outrank the WC, except in icehcokey where the Stanley Cup outranks all.

Last year´s WC final was the Dream final. It was scripted by Hollywood. It put ladies´ football on the map. The world took notice.

In contrast, it could be argued that this Olympic tournament has brought the game into disrepute. The senior brass must be praying that the U-20 WC is uncontroversial and that Euro-13 is a riproaring success with a fabulous final.

Maybe winning at all costs carries a hidden price tag? We do not mind our champions being proud of their achievements as long as they show humility and are generous of spirit. In a recent orienteering world championship a French and Norwegian runner gave up certain golds and silvers to assist an injured competitor. By their fruits ye shall know them.
