Womens Soccer United

Japan and US will face each other and Sweden in June.

Japan and the US, has accepted Swedens invitation to a minitournament, 16-20 of June. The games will be played in two of the host cities of next years European Championship, Halmstad and Göteborg. Unfortunately, the swedish team will yet again not play on it's home stadium (Gamla Ullevi, Göteborg), since it's booked for screening of the mens Euro (Poland - Ukraine). This will surely be a small relief for the swedish fotball association (SVFF), since they have had strong criticism, for not promoting the womens national team, and not played a single game on home soil after the World Cup until the friendly against Canada (2012-03-31). Some reporters are already worried about the lack of commitment to next years Euro competition.

Dates and locations are:

16 of June, 16:00 (local time), Örjans Vall, Halmstad

Sweden - USA

18 of June, 13:00 (local time) Örjans Vall, Halmstad

Japan - USA

20 of June, 19:15 (local time) Gamla Ullevi, Göteborg

Sweden - Japan

Brilliant about the minitournament! Thanks for the info @Sebastian

Thank you Sebastian for the update

Thx for this information!

Thanks @Sebastian. Looking forward for this tournament :)

many of you will surely want to see the japan-usa game, and sadly the channel here in sweden which will show the swedish games on tv4 sport, hasn't said anything about this one, and i think they won't air it either...it's saddens me to say that the womens soccer isn't as popular in sweden as in other countries.

on positive note, the game between japan and usa, has been scheduled for 13:00 (local time), which translates to 21:00 (tokyo time)..and this was on a japanese request, so i gather that the japanese people will air it, and when they do, it usually find it's way onto the internet...

Thanks for the great information Sebastian.

It's a shame that it will not be shown on tv4 sport, they are fantastic fixtures. I hope that Japan will broadcast their fixtures, like you said it seems that the kick off time has been scheduled for this to be possible. Do you think with the move of all the new players to the Damallsvenskan this season that this will improve the popularity?

after much pressure from the swedish people, the organizers of the event (showing the mens game on a big screen on ullevi), has moved things around, and made it possible for the ladies to play at their "home" stadium, Gamla Ullevi.

@wsu - i think the season overall will get a boost in popularity, but not a big one...unfortunately the only single player that can get the attention for the game is marta. no club in damallsvenskan or the national team gets so much attention as she...people here might not have heard about seger, dahlqvist, boquete. bachmann or mittag, but most have heard of marta, although they don't follow the sport..the swedish football association is just terrible in promoting and advertising the sport on the womens side, and that is truly saddening, cause the wnt is our best national team in soccer. but it all comes down to money, and the women, both the league as the national team just doesn't bring in that much of it. you could argue that promoting the game would eventually get the people to the stadiums, but this seems to be a foreign concept for the svff (football association).

"it's saddens me to say that the womens soccer isn't as popular in sweden as in other countries" -- it depends on what you mean.  Sweden has a ladies football league which the USA do not (at the moment at least) and Marta returned to play in Sweden where she had had several successful seasons previously including winning the Ladies CL with Umeå.

-- unfortunately, you are right that media are not receptive to ladies football in Sweden just as in most other countries. Why this should be so is a curious fact. The spectators at games this season varies between about 300 up to 2900. The median is about 630 per match but the mean is about 1000, that is a few clubs have good attendances but most struggle. Oddly, the clubs with good figures tend to be in places where there are no good men´s teams, which may be significant.

Hammarström scored the "Hammer goal" aka "Hammertor" in the world cup which gave Sweden victory over France in spite of being one player less. 1.8 million Swedes watched on TV the semifinal that Sweden lost to Japan, the only match Sweden lost having beaten USA in the group matches.

As regards getting the match at Gamla Ullevi, the stadium must now be filled. Otherwise those who fought to get the match there will have egg on their faces. This requires that women go and watch the match. Women must show solidarity and loyalty with their sisters who play football. This is one of the crucial challenges for ladies´ soccer to thrive, that women support their own.

Once the stands at ladies´ football matches round the world have been full for a season or two, the sponsors will sign on. To fill the stands other ladies have to go there and stand or sit. They need not understand the game. They need not like it. But the stands have to be full. It is called solidarity and loyalty.

since uswnt always seems to be at the location before games at least a week, they have asked Göteborg FC for a sparring-game, and coach Nilsson has happily agreed to Pia's suggestion.

so on june 12, Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC will face USWNT in Fjärås (about 30 km south of Göteborg) Fjärås is the hometown or rather village, of the clubs biggest sponsor, Peter Bronsman. Fjärås is lying between Göteborg and Halmstad on the west-coast.

Thank you kindly for this information.  Let´s hope lots of people will get to these matches because it will be the best soccer to be played by ladies´ in Sweden for quite a while.  Are the events being well adevrtised?  How much are the tickets?

only advertising for this event that i have gathered are when you are on a league game, and the speaker yells out info about the games. and of course there is also the occasional pop-up ad on svenskfotboll.se page, but mostly what's popping up when i'm there, is the mens friendly against iceland on june 30th. there might be some ads in the newspapers, but i don't read any so..

saw an interview about an event coordiantor for this mini-tournament, and she said that to this date, there will be about 50 japanese journalists attending...

have bought tickets to the usa game in halmstad, and it went for 150 SEK (~21$) for adults, kids up to 16 years of age go for 60 SEK (~8,4$), game between sweden-japan in göteborg will cost the same for adults, but 70 SEK (~9,8$) for kids up to the age of 15. why the difference i do not know...

japan vs usa costs 100 SEK (~14$) for adults, and kids up to the age of 16 will have to pay 50 SEK (~7$) in halmstad.
