Womens Soccer United

Japan and US will face each other and Sweden in June.

Japan and the US, has accepted Swedens invitation to a minitournament, 16-20 of June. The games will be played in two of the host cities of next years European Championship, Halmstad and Göteborg. Unfortunately, the swedish team will yet again not play on it's home stadium (Gamla Ullevi, Göteborg), since it's booked for screening of the mens Euro (Poland - Ukraine). This will surely be a small relief for the swedish fotball association (SVFF), since they have had strong criticism, for not promoting the womens national team, and not played a single game on home soil after the World Cup until the friendly against Canada (2012-03-31). Some reporters are already worried about the lack of commitment to next years Euro competition.

Dates and locations are:

16 of June, 16:00 (local time), Örjans Vall, Halmstad

Sweden - USA

18 of June, 13:00 (local time) Örjans Vall, Halmstad

Japan - USA

20 of June, 19:15 (local time) Gamla Ullevi, Göteborg

Sweden - Japan

Judging by how the SvFF let the attendance pergame at ladies matches slip from the high numbers both average and peak about 7-10 years ago, the lack of serious advertising for these ladies´ preolympic games is in character.  Let´s hope they do a thorough advertising blitz closer to the time of the matches.

150 SEK is actually more than the most expensive ticket sfor the ladies´ CL final in Munich, where also a family of 2 adults and 2 kids could enter for 20€. If there are no family tickets for these matches the same family will fork out 420 SEK (45€) or 440 SEK (50€) -- considerably more.  Judging by the fiasco of the recent icehockey world cup where ticket prices were out of reality, these matches risk being embarrasingly poorly attended.

only advertising for this event that i have gathered are when you are on a league game, and the speaker yells out info about the games. and of course there is also the occasional pop-up ad on svenskfotboll.se page, but mostly what's popping up when i'm there, is the mens friendly against iceland on june 30th. there might be some ads in the newspapers, but i don't read any so..

saw an interview about an event coordiantor for this mini-tournament, and she said that to this date, there will be about 50 japanese journalists attending...

have bought tickets to the usa game in halmstad, and it went for 150 SEK (~21$) for adults, kids up to 16 years of age go for 60 SEK (~8,4$), game between sweden-japan in göteborg will cost the same for adults, but 70 SEK (~9,8$) for kids up to the age of 15. why the difference i do not know...

japan vs usa costs 100 SEK (~14$) for adults, and kids up to the age of 16 will have to pay 50 SEK (~7$) in halmstad.

you will not hear any objections about the ticket costs for most sports here in sweden, but the womens game, well there aren't that many families attending i must say. i see more often than not a father and his daughter, than a whole family. some teams like Göteborg FC have team tickets, which are a bargain, 200 SEK for 20 junior players an 4 chaperons, or 400 SEK for senior teams. those prices are really a bargain. i bet you could contact most clubs and ask about discount if you have a larger family, i bet they would want your family at the game and pay say 250 SEK, than not attending at all.

the cl final in munich had only one goal, to attract people. the organization behind the event knew before hand that it would be a loss in terms of money. maybe the made up some from street vendors, food, drinks and such, but i doubt it. just the new grass-pitch went for 3,5 million. don't really know who picked up the tab, if it was uefa or the city of munich.

have gotten some more info about the friendly göteborg vs uswnt:

June 12th, Ögärdets IP in Fjärås, at 18:00 (local time)

Do you think people in Sweden understand that in this tournament they get a chance to watch the current World Champions and the only team to defeat Sweden? That they get to see the runners-up whom Sweden beat in the group matches?

The attendances at Göteborgs games in Damallsvenskan leave a lot to be desired. OK, Tyresö and Vittsjö has loyal fans but Gbg averages about 500 at their home games and Gbg is not only Sweden´s 2nd biggest city but its football capital.

Thanks for shouting about these games. Hope someone hears you.

Sebastian old bean -- you who are keeping a eagle eye on this tournament, have you any information about how many tickets have been sold so far?  How is the advertising campaign going?  Are the matches being promoted through media or just via ladies´ football clubs?  When all is said and done, neither Gbg nor Jitex have wonderful home crowds.

old me.. lol...

have some unfortunate news...the game between Göteborg FC - USWNT has been cancelled. the given reasons are a very late demand from the very complicated us guidelines, and approval from fifa. only other option to have the game would have been without media coverage and without people. this won't promote the sport and give the fans the opportunity to see Göteborg FC face the national team of the US, so Göteborg didn't see the point of having the game. a fifa permission don't seem to be such a huge task to overcome, so i guess the undisclosed demand might be the overhanging issue.

it's a shame, since i planned to attend.

@Lars, haven't found any info about how many tickets have been sold, and i looked around. since i'm just a mortal, it would take some time to get the info, if i got it at all...they still haven't gotten back to me about a previous issue. have asked them 4 things through the years, and have only gotten one reply..if i had press-credentials it would have been another issue, but since i don't i wouldn't get my hopes up.

I thought that i saw a post yesterday (twitter) with pictures of some swedish national team players (schelin, hammarström, and i one more, forgot who) that was hanging along the side of an arena, i think it was Gamla Ullevi in Göteborg. Halmstad is promoting the games on its homepage for tourism, which i accidentally saw when i was searching for something. if there are more promoting being made somewhere i can't say. i barely watch swedish television, and besides getting the news through my two swedish news-outlets svt.se and gp.se i don't follow it elsewhere. i must also confess, that i'm very seldom in town, a bit of a hermit i must say, so my chance to see some kind of promotion is slim at best. i only go into town for Kopparbergs games, and those few occasions when you have too. so you see, i'ain't the best source of information.

Malmö is the exception, but almost all the clubs with higher numbers come from smaller towns and villages. Tyresö has some distance from Stockholm, so i don't count it as a townee..those small towns and villages don't have the same abundance of other sports and recreational facilities to compete with football. another thing is that football seems to be a popularity sport sometimes, a couple of years ago, when Umeå was at its peak, they had some crowds with 7-8000 people. don't know how often they had it, trying to find anything about the womens game is a challenge at best. a swedish reporter has already reported signs that the japanese figures seems to be going down...

Keep watching the ether for us, Sebastian old bean. You are doing a great job ferreting out all sorts of details and encouragement and absurdities. Regarding playing without anyone present, the USA did that against China about a week ago.  Then they played the official match a few days later. Odd, but there it is.

Do you think it is because ladies´ football is a game played by middle-class women, they do not hustle more?  It seems as if the players and coaches regard it as a god-given right to play soccer even if only 200 turn up to watch.  My estimate, for what it is worth, is that it takes about €3M to run a ladies soccer club with a top team and including U-19, U-17 and U-15 recruitment and development. If you charge €10 at the gate and 7000 turn up for each home game and here are 15 in a season, your turnover is €1.05M, so you still have to find €2M from somewhere.

It is, therefore, worrying if attendance in Japan is falling. If the current World champions about to compete in the Olympics, cannot get bums on seats, what hope is there for the rest of the world?  OK. The Germans are no doubt seething at not getting to the Olympics, so order likely has been given to the wealthy clubs like Bayern, Schalke and Dortmund to pump money into the ladies´ side to regain supremacy in 2015, if not already in Euro-13.

Where the Swedish Football Assoc is going I have no idea. Hopefully the men will do well this year -- though that will not help but rather hinder the ladies side of the show.

Keep reporting Sebastian.  Any nugget is gold. Please comment on other postings etc.

Three ladies play abroad: two in France and one in Germany. Lyon beat a (different) German team to clinch the UEFA ladies CL. Maybe Frankfurt should have gone shopping in Japan also?
