Should Women's National Team Kits Be Feminized?

There has been a lot of strong opinions about the recently unveiled USA Women's National Team Kits made by Nike.

The response have been somewhat negative from the understandably passionate US National fans with thoughts including 'Possibly the worst kit ever......that's a bad kit....appalling......'

This is the new kit via ussoccer.com:

Germany have also had a new design for their WNT kit. Designed by Adidas, the kit has more of a feminine feel compared to the Men's National team's kit, View here.

I just want to point you to a previous discussion on WSU.

Is the designs better for the female body to be able to perform at the best ability, or is it purely cosmetic?

Another issue that has been raised is that there is no male equivalent shirts for male fans of the women's national team. At this moment, there hasn't been a comment from the players as to whether they like the look/feel of the design but we will be able to watch the USWNT perform in their new kits tonight against England, more details here.

What is your take on these dedicated kits, and the style in which they are being made?

Not a huge fan of these kits, but I'll wait until we get to actually see them in action before making a final decision :) I don't think they're any more "feminized" than the last kit, just don't really know what they were going for here...I also don't understand why they would make the away kit black instead of the traditional blue. I think that bothers me more than the actual design of them. I do like that the stars are back in the proper place above the US shield.

With regard to their not being a men's version to purchase, I think that's unfortunate, but they don't really sell the men's kits in a more feminine cut, or at least a small enough size to fit a lot of women. I think they should make it a little easier for fans of the opposite sex to support the teams, instead of assuming that women will only watch women and men will only watch men.

Yeah, it was thought that they were going to be worn against England in the Friendly but USA have a few more friendlies before the World Cup kicks off, so I am sure we will see them soon.

I agree with you, there are a lot of male fans of women's soccer and female fans of men's soccer and it would be nice to have the opportunity to be able to wear the kit of the team you are supporting. In England the women's National kits are the same as the men's National kits and they do now offer them to fit females, which is good as this was not always the way. Previously you had to go for the 'baggy' look when supporting the national team lol.

Not a fan of the baggy look lol!
Lol @ do co!

I think they're debuting them on the game May 14 v Japan. Read that somewhere. There's supposed to be an official announcement about them tomorrow on ussoccer.com.

I don't mind a little loose, but for some of us the small is still too big, so I'm stuck getting boys shirts usually lol.

Thanks Meg :) Will look out for the announcement.
Hmm...still nothing on the site. The ussoccer people on the matchtracker Saturday definitely said Monday. Maybe they meant the Monday before they debut.
US Soccer have just announced that the new USWNT kit will debut against Japan on the 14th May when they play Japan. The kits are available to buy here

New Germany uniforms:

Thanks Izzy :) I like this kit. Will they be adding another star to their kit after this years womern's World Cup??

Aww, man, the OP said everything I was about to: in my mind, the kits are fine. A bit unusual, but they don't look too bad on TV. But indeed, I have had a hankering to add to my jersey collection, which currently consists of a green Sounders MLS jersey and a Beat WUSA jersey that no longer comes close to fitting me (and it's 2011 anyway. Who wears anything from 2003?). And there is no male equivalent jersey.

Guess I'll need to proceed with a Cambuur or Sounders shale jersey. I'd get a WNY Flash jersey, but the site offering them doesn't put themout inXXL, apparently.

The German kits are gorgeous!

I don't like the U.S one, it looks like a nurses uniform.

I do like the shape of women's kits but if you don't have a nice shape yourself (like me), then it's a no go.
