Interior beat Red Scorpions to win Gambia women’s football clasico

A dramatic 4-3 shootout helped Interior FC beat arch rivals Red Scorpions to win the 2018 Gambia Women’s FF Cup final after a drab goalless 90 minutes contest.

In a game short on clear-cut opportunities, substitute Penda Bah (Gambian Women’s National Team skipper) of Interior had a goal disallowed for offside just seven minutes from time.

Mariama Ceesayhad earlier in the game kept her Red Scorpions alive with a spectacular save to keep out Jabou Jobarteh’s free-kick within minutes of the restart before Pullo Bah’s poor miss in front of goal for Red Scorpions.

The frantic nature of the rivalry contest continued into the latter stages as both teams looked for the win, and Awa Tambawas sent off for a second bookable offence in the 85th minute following a late challenge on Interior’s sub Catherine Jatta, but the score stayed 0-0 at the Sere Kunda East Mini stadium.

After levelling 3-3 on shootouts, the Police Ladies (Interior FC) nearly surrendered the title to Red Scorpions after star player Isatou Jallow missed the fourth kick. But Interior were indebted to goalkeeper Aminata Gaye for keeping out two brilliant saves from Kumba Kuyateh and Fatou Fatty as they eventually emerged winners on 4 – 3.

Interior FC have now retained the domestic Cup title for the third successive time after they have dominated the previous two editions over Abuko United in 2016 and Immigration in 2017.

Red Scorpions had earlier in the season claimed the domestic league title as their only silverware of the season.

As winners, Interior were doled out a cheque of One Hundred Thousand Dalasis (D100,000), an equivalent of Two Thousand, One hundred and Fifteen US Dollars (2,115.95) while Red Scorpions went with a consolation price of Seventy-Five Thousand Dalasis (D75,000), amounting to One Thousand, Five Hundred and Eighty-Six US Dollars (1,586.97) as Runners-Up.

Both sides will face-off again later this year ahead of the 2018/2019 domestic League Season in the curtain raiser.
