Guatemala 6 - 0 Dominican Republic
Wendy Pineda 2’ 5’ 29’ (Guatemala)
Maria Monterroso 9’ 90+1’ (Guatemala)
Ana Matinez 53’ (Guatemala)
Wendy Pineda scored three first-half goals and Guatemala concluded its run at the CONCACAF Olympic women's qualifying with a 6-0 victory over the Dominican Republic on Tuesday.
Pineda converted 72 seconds after the opening kickoff and added goals in the fifth and 29th minutes to give Guatemala its first goals and win at the tournament, ending the Dominican Republic's stay with a third straight loss and outscored 27-0.
Guatemala entered the match after a 13-0 loss to the United States and 5-0 loss to Mexico.
"The losses were painful," Pineda said. "Obviously its going to hurt, for any team to let up so many goals. But we knew we had another opportunity for the work that we have been doing and to be able to finish strong and show the type of team we have. Maybe the league isn't professional in Guatemala, but we're improving and keep going."
USA 4 - 0 Mexico
Carli Lloyd 7’ 57’ 86’ (USA)
Heather O’Reilly 8’ (USA)
Carli Lloyd scored the first of three goals less than seven minutes after the opening kickoff and the United States avenged its Women's World Cup Qualifying loss to Mexico with a 4-0 victory Tuesday night.
The result in CONCACAF Olympic women's qualifying set the semifinal pairings - which will determine the region's two berths in the London Games field, pitting the Americans against Costa Rica, and host Canada against Mexico.
Although the United States beat Mexico in June in a friendly, Tuesday's match was seen by many as a rematch of the World Cup qualifying semis in October 2010 in Cancun, when the host Mexicans upset the United States 2-1 to earn a berth to Germany. The loss forced the United States to play in a playoff to earn the last place in the World Cup.
