USA 4 – 0 Canada
Goals From:
Alex Morgan 5’ 57’ (USA)
Abby Wambach 24’ 29’ (USA)
Abby Wambach scored twice to become the second-most prolific scorer in women's soccer history and lead the United States to a 4-0 victory over Canada on Sunday in the final of CONCACAF Olympic women's qualifying.
Alex Morgan also scored twice and was instrumental in both of tallies by the 31-year-old Wambach, who increased her total to 131 and moved one goal past retired American Kristine Lilly in career scoring. American Mia Hamm, who retired from the international game in 2004, holds the record with 158.
"It's great to feel the gold," U.S. coach Pia Sundhage said. "Today we decided to go not with one of the best players, Lauren Cheney. She hasn't been in the starting lineup. But the combination with Abby and Alex Morgan turned out to be pretty good."
It was the 43rd victory claimed by the United States in 51 matches over Canada, which disputes one of the wins as not an official match.
Both teams clinched their places in the London Games on Friday with semifinal victories. The United States beat Costa Rica 3-0, while Canada subdued Mexico 3-1. It was the first loss in five games by Canada, while the United States was the only team to win every game -- by a combined 38-0.
Sunday's game was largely for bragging rights between the North American rivals. The result extended the Americans' unbeaten run against Canada to 25, having not lost since March 2001.

Permalink Reply by Sebastian Kanty on January 30, 2012 at 15:30 they had a trophy?..for what? isn't this a qualification for the tournament that actually can grant a trophy?..everybody knew from the get go who would win...kind of put the panam cup or what it is called in the shadow. a tournament that actually is a counterpart to the euro's. well no matter, it was good to see some soccer in the dead of winter...
a pretty nice photo though..thx..
Permalink Reply by vanjory on January 31, 2012 at 3:16 Well, "trophy", if you see in the photo above, Christie Rampone lifting it...I know what you mean and where you are coming from but still, this qualification thing is a Tournament in that sense. It's like WC Qualifiers. There's the Oceania, Asia, etc and the winner of the respective area of that tournament gets a WC spot. E.g Asian Football Cup.

Permalink Reply by Sebastian Kanty on January 31, 2012 at 8:46 you say that you know what i mean, but then compare it to wc qualifiers...if you qualify for the wc, what do you get? a trophy?...no, a place in the playoffs, nothing more (there might be a money aspect, but no prize in itself, b/c you haven't actually won anything)
