Olympic gold medallist and former coach of Hammarby IF, Tony Gustavsson is Tyresö FF's new head coach.

Tony Gustavsson was assistant coach to Pia Sundhage for the US Women's National Football Team.

Gustavsson commented:  "Tyresö FF got me interested when they presented their aggressive investments and when they want to win titles by an attacking looking and attractive football... "

Tyresö FF are pleased to have appointed a head coach with the credentials and skills that Tony possesses. He has a strong and proven record and has gained great insight and experience into women's football from his time with the USWNT.

Tony Gustavsson is presumably a fairly good coach ... He has been training most Swedish men's team and not had any major successes. Women's teams, he has never practices, except
USWNT. I remember that he was kicked from Hammarby when he was training their men .. That was not so good results. Yes, he was assistant coach to Pia S in the Olympics. He was in charge of U.S. defence. But otherwise he has no experience of female football. There is little difference between female and male teams and how you train and treat them. So I think it's a mediocre recruitment for Tyresö. Was a little surprised that Pia S had appointed him as assister coach of USA women's team during the Olympics. But we'll see what this culminates in.

Thank you for the information. The best thing will be if he has learnt from Pia Sundhage and will take his experiences and use them. It will be interesting to see how he progresses with the team and check out his tactics.

I agree with JohnT on this one. TG is a shadowy figure of unproven metal. Maybe Tyresö´s directors are confident that they can qualify for the CL and therefore they can afford to wait and see?

What we can say more is that the pressure within Tyresö is so high ... you have to have results this year because it has made giant investment in players.Tyresös ambition is to become the best team in Europe. But their former coach resigned, for personal reasons, said Stefan Fredriksson ... But I think the pressure is hard from investors and club. It has put everything on one card as we say here in Sweden. I'm not sure about a coach Gustavsson knows what he's getting himself into.

How does Tyresö differ from Man Utd, Barca or Milan?

@ Lars B,,,,I could not believe my eyes after I saw your question about Tyresö. You do not sit and compare Tyresö with teams like Barcelona, Manch U and Milan .... You can not compare. Since the level of ambition Tyresö have are a bit of uninteresting. It's more about Tony Gustavsson cope Tyresös pressure. You must not forget that he has no greater success no matter what he did ... Besides the Olympics. Olympic was not really his success but the team and head coach. He was probably a small part of it.

Everything is relative, JohnT my learned friend, and everything is wave-motion.

It is, indeed, true that not only do Swedish ladies football clubs not enjoy the level of financing that other clubs enjoy around Europe but, moreover, some of the money squandered by certain Swedish male sports-clubs must make the ladies´  tears run. A wealthy gentleman provided at least 6M € and probably 9M € funding to an icehockey team in Malmö. We do not know where the money went but we know that there were no results. 1M € is said to be the yearly budget for Sweden´s biathlon team -- in other words, the smaller sum of 6M € would have defrayed their costs till the Olympics after the next one -- yet no journalist seems willing to dig up the truth (or editor publish it).

To return to Tony.  As long as Tyresö beat Vittsjö at home in 10 days time, Tyresö are to practical purposes assured of playing in the CL. Seeing that one of Vittsjö´s key defenders was injured in London and is out for the rest of the season, Tyresö´s task is even easier than expected. Thus, there is not much pressure.

There are a couple of scenarios. If Pia Sundhage takes over the blue-yellows (Sweden´s NT) Tony might well join her as an assiatant, and Tyresö would look for a longterm solution, which with a berth in the CL would be a piece of cake.  Alternatively, should Sweden do without Pia´s services, the board of Tyresö may well sign her.

Either way, the future looks relatively bright for Tony Gustavsson, wave-motion or no wave-motion.

What do you think, Gromit?  Any thoughts? Please share them.

@Lars - I certainly woudn't dare to have an opinion about Damallsvenskan ! The only thing I can say since you very kindly ask for my thoughts is that I can't imagine Tony Gustavsson signing as a coach for a team, then immediately leaving it for joining Pia Sundaghe at the NT's head. He signed, he'll stay. That's the rule and that's how contracts are. Unless he signed for two weeks ? ;o)
