The Ligue 1 feminine's calendar is known. Here it is (below). Thanks to http://statsfootofeminin.fr/
Unlike British football players who never stopped and even play on Boxing Day (is it the same for the girls, actually ?), French "footballeurs" and "footballeuses" HAVE TO stop at Xmas and New Year's time because, as you know, French food is too much good and you have to take all your time to enjoy it :)
A good St Etienne-Montpellier to start (september 9th), then a QSG-St Etienne on second round. The first "top match" will be at 3rd step : Montpellier-QSG. With or without Lindsay Horan ? I suppose, with.
Juvisy-OL is at 5th step (oct.14th), OL-Montpellier on the 8th (11/11 after the ceremony), and QSG-OL the week after.

Gromit, old hound, it is indeed true that Boxing Day is a major sports day in the UK and that the Brits play football on Good Friday, but the Brits also did not use to play sports on Sunday. Saturday was their main sportsday but the advent of an international TV audience changed that. Wimbledon may have been the first.
The English have taken a leaf out of the Nordic countries book and their top ladies´ division play a summer season. OK, in Sweden, Norway and Finland, well understood, you are forced to play April to November because of the climate. But the Brits have gone that route too for their top flight. Maybe a summer season is something ALL European ladies´ teams should consider?
What are the odds in France on these teams? Lyon first, but which are the next 3 or 4? Or, does it not matter because Lyon has vacuumed-cleaned up everyone who is good?
Meanwhile, keep working on that scarf ...
Permalink Reply by Gromit on July 17, 2012 at 10:06 Dear Lars, I think it impossible to play football in France in deep summer. First, it's much too hot for a too long time. At least July 1rst till August 31rd, paricularly of course in the south. When I was living in England, I used to play football with the University I taught at, and playing in summer was not a big problem. But England is much less warm than France. And I'm not speaking about the polar countries like yours ;)
Secondly, it's holiday vacations. As you know since it is highly popularized by some very jealous persons, French summer holidays are very long because French people are very lazy ;)
Almost two months holidays for schoolkids and students (even longer for University students), from mid-july to beginning of september. Working people have five legal holiday weeks for the year and many of them take three of them or even a complete month and go away. With one or two more weeks at Christmas time. So, they are no longer in the big cities homing the main Football clubs. And people vacating somewhere won't go and watch a football match.
The season usually finishes at the end of may. and starts again mid-august, which is already too much earlier I think. The players are not completely ready yet and they have to play with 30°C.
But the topic is regularly discussed in France and it's not impossible to see changes in the future.
Don't worry for the scarf, I finished it and ordered more wool...
Is it known why the Qataris are so keen to support ladies´ football in PsG? Do they contend that they will get a quicker return on investment than on the men´s side? (Well understood, a much smaller investment necessary.) Any ideas, Gromit? (Can´t see the picture where I am so cannot comment.)

France are fortunate. The published accounts of the 12 teams in Sweden's Damallsvenskan of 2011, only 6 were in the black (solvent). The team that was relegated at he end of last season has since gone bankrupt.
One team, who won the Swedish Cup in 2010, looks like going bankrupt during this season. They hope against hope to keep their snouts above water and finish the season. They have till tomorrow to find 40 000€. In that case they will have a couple of months to sort out their finances, but the future looks grim.
Two teams last year finished with profits of 300€ and 400€, respectively. One team is being bankrolled by an industrialist. Why he is so keen on ladies´ football is not clear. That team, Göteborg, has median home crowds of about 500, that is the same as the team which is in dire straits, so he must be pumping in a lot of lolly. Worse, Göteborg is the football capital of Sweden, and with a population of 500 000 in the town (not counting suburbs), is clearly not pulling in the spectators.
Judging by the Olympics and the U-20 World Cup, ladies football seems to be a game of the shores of the Pacific ocean, if not the sands of Iwo Jima. Maybe Europe can improve, though it will be tough, not least seeing that women's soccer flourishes where the men's game is weak. Maybe the Halls of Montezuma can disprove that theory -- but it has a Pacific shore, and the men have never achieved anything, only the U-23 and this year.
Todd old bean, please return Gromit´s favour and write in his Forum about how to build a successful ladies professional football in USA. You will find it on the WSU home page, under the picture it is the 4th item in the Forum.
Just type freely from the heart, preferably with your brain in gear, but type. Chuck out ideas to the left and to the right. Don´t worry; be happy.

Permalink Reply by Todd Labit on August 23, 2012 at 19:45 Haha! Man, I wouldnt know the first thing about building a team! All I know is you need a team with Abby Wambach, Alex Morgan, Hope Solo, Louisa Necib, Wendie Renard, Camille Abil, Elodie Thomis, and Gaetane Thiney. Then you have the dream team. An unstoppable force :) hahaha

Todd, my learned friend, does German or Swizz blood course through your veins? Is soccer always in your heart? You just gave Gromit an attack of appoplexy but I, being of sound Viking stock in spite of my Italian name, can cope. Remember that the Vikings exported democracy to the world.
I would love to have Ms Wambach and Ms Morgan in my attack. Yes, sir. Let´s stick Lotta Schelin in there for good measure while we are on a roll.
As the incomparable Gunnar Nordahl said, it is no big deal scoring goals when you have such a great provider as Gunnar Gren. Eh bien, who is (are) our Gunnar Gren(s)? I put it to you that we ask Miyama and Ogimi to fill those roles. OK?
What about the defense? I would love to have Kumagai and Iwashimizu as my two central defenders any day. I do not know what the opposition make of them, but, by God, they scare me (blatantly and unapologetically plagiarised from the Iron Duke).
OK. Who else? Sara Thunebro would be an excellent choice.
Goalkeeper? With a team like this, who needs a goalkeeper? Ask the Dream Team of 1970. To plagiarise that other scourge of the French: "Every team expects their goalie to do her duty!"
Roger, over and out!! We shall fight them on the beaches and all that but as long as they make it our finest hour, what do we care, ball-bearing runs or not? Yehaw!
