Womens Soccer United

Here is a good map of France published on http://www.footofeminin.fr/ .

You can spot where the 12 teams are situated in the country. As you can notice, Normandy, Atlantic coast, South-East and even North and East are not very active in Ligue 1...

Do you know if Ligue 1 games will be streamed like frauenbundesliga games in the DFB

Gromit, old bean, there are no ladies´ teams in neither Marseille, Nice nor Bordeaux?  Is it like Sweden, that many ladies´ sides are in places where there either is no men´s team or the men´s team is not very good? Or, are the teams along TGV-lines for ease of travel?

@ Lars : traditionally, it's a mixture actually. For instance, Montpellier is the historical city and club which started a feminine football section in France beside its men's team. As you know, Montpellier won two Women Championships in the past (many current Lyon players started à Montpellier or played there, like Abily, Bompastor, Necib...) and the Men professionnal section won its first title last season, beating QSG against all odds.

Lyon or Saint Etienne are of course other cities who home both men and feminine football section (same club). Lyon is a bit special since it is the result of a fusion between the original big Lyon team (FC Lyon, 4 national titles) and OL. Actually, FC Lyon was absorbed by OL, some people will say that OL bought that too ;

Toulouse was another city with two important football teams, the women (different club from the men's) winning 4 consecutive titles. It is noticeable that Reims who used to drink a lot of Champagne in the 1950's and 1960's thanks to Kopa, Piantoni and Fontaine, became a second and even a third rate club when the local women won 5 national titles in the 1970's ! Etc.

At the same time, yes, there are some feminine more or less stronghold places who never had (or no longer) men's professional clubs : Juvisy is of course the most emblematic example (6 titles). But also Arras, Issy, Vendenheim, Rodez or Yzeure for the current Ligue 1 members.

The French federation imposed today an obligation for all men's professional clubs to have and develop a feminine section. The new Ministry of Sports (who is a woman, Valérie Fourneyron, formerly Sports medic, particularly for Rouen's Ice Hockey team and national French Volley-Ball team) strongly backs this policy.

The new season sees Toulouse coming back in Ligue 1. That is important because it's France's 4th biggest city and it has the TFC which is one of the six or seven men teams at the moment. As I already written, Marseille reached Ligue 2 at the end of last season and it is hope to see it joining  Ligue 1 pretty soon. As for Nice, unfortunately, the team - existing - is still very far from Ligue 1… Bordeaux, Nantes, Strasbourg are also missing.

When I watch the map of Feminine Ligue 2, it's plenty of names I never heard about before. Very small cities or even big villages, like Templemars, Cormelles, Conde, Bischeim, Corne, Flace Macon (but I know Macon quite well), Nivolas-Vermelle, La Veore, Arpajon, Blanquefort… If you're interested, I could post the map here. There are more teams in Ligue 2 because that one is divided in three separate championships. The winners meet for a final league and the final winners go up to Ligue 1.

In conclusion : yes, women football has a tendency to be more present where men football is not very developed. But with the professionalization and the obligation for the male pro-teams to have a feminine section, that will be less and less true.

Yes, Dick, the Ligue 1 matches will be broadcasted (20 of them I think) but only on paid channel Eurosport. I don't know if you can catch it. Father streaming could manage something in case... ;)

@ Gromit -- you wrote:   “The French federation imposed today an obligation for all men's professional clubs to have and develop a feminine section. Oddly enough, Gromit my silent hound, in many individualistic sports women get a comparatively fair deal as the men, while in team sports the disadvantaging of the female species can be extreme.

For example, in the skisports – alpine, cross-country or shooting (biathlon) – the prize-money is the same and many ladies´ names are as well recognised as the men. For example, biathlon has its two Magdalenas – Forsberg and Neuner. I can´t remember a top German male alpine skier but they have had, amongst others, Rosi Mittermaier, Maria Riesch and Vikky Rebensburg. Marit Björgen and Charlotte Kalla spring to mind in cross-country skiing. Indeed, Kalla´s win on the final climb of her first Tour de Ski will remain a classic. The manufacturers love rivalries and those skiing on their equipment winning, which probably helps.

One can wonder whether it is optimal that the individual men´s clubs are forced to have female divisions or whether collecting an overall sum from all the male clubs and distributing it to ladies´ teams might be better. There is probably no single answer, and as long as the women get their fair share of the cake, it probably does not matter, but some girls might prefer to start in female-alone unisex teams rather than in a mixed environment.

@ Lars : the fact to oblige professional clubs to develop a feminine section is not a ban of "unisex" teams. Juvisy will keep on existing as well as the others and the girls can go and play where not a single man's shadow can be spotted if they want.

Of course, the professionnal clubs will have (if they play the game...) an advantage for many reasons. But it's generally and already the case : Lyon, Montpellier, QSG, Arsenal, Newcastle, tomorrow and maybe Bayern Munich, Barça...

eurosport it is then:) I hope french womens soccer takes from frauenbundesliga, and streams more games along with the eurosport.

I am under the (deluded?) impression that Eurosport has been good to ladies´ football in Europe over the years, so maybe clubs feel honour bound to stick with them?  I suspect that the viewing figures of and the income from male CL is considerably more than for feminine CL.

I am not sure that I follow you, Richard old bean. The CL is an international club competition in Europe and one assumes that UEFA negotiates the televising both for women and men. Likewise, the national FAs negotiate the TV contracts in their own countries, I assume. Just like the NFL does in USA or NHL for North-America.

The issue here is that ladies´ football gets precious little air-time and the little it gets is on subscription channels or pay per view networks. I presume that way the ladies get some income but they lose out in exposure.

Maybe I have misunderstood you, in which case imply keep me right.

I think exposure should come first. I find it easy to follow german womens soccer because they have many games officially streamed. why make it hard to see them.

if they can be seen easily, that should help shirt deals at least.

There is money in German ladies´ football today, at least among the top clubs. Potsdam and Frankfurt have dominated the game for years. Now there are two new kids on the block: Wolfsburg and Bayern Munich. Both have access to money. Wolfsburg is a fully owned subsidiary of the VW-group while Bayern´s men a rich club. Likely the Ladies´ DFB have some common agreement in place for streaming but I do not know for sure. Maybe Gromit does. He seems to know everything.
