The local media reports that Japan's national soccer team player Kozue Ando will have officially renewed her contract with German club FCR 2001 Duisburg and will certainly remain with FCR 2001 Duisburg. It was previously rumored that 30-year-old Kozue Ando would return from German club FCR 2001 Duisburg to the Nadeshiko League's team Urawa Red Diamonds Ladies.

@Hiroshi -- is it known why so many Japanese ladies play in Germany?  Is there a secret link based on Honda, Mazda and Toyota on the one side and BMW, Mercedes and VW on the other?  Having typed this, I seem to remember that before the war Duisburg made cars -- luxury cars? -- and that is gone the way of the dodo.

   Seriously though, are there Japanese sponsors who defray the German clubs some of their costs and subsidise these young ladies?  If so, why Germany?

Yūki Ōgimi now plays as a forward for 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam.

Saki Kumaga currently plays for 1. FFC Frankfurt.

Kozue Ando will continue to play mainly as an attacking midfielder for FCR 2001 Duisburg.

Yuka Sugiyama, a graduate of Fujieda Junshin High School, presently plays for 1. FC Köln. She earlier played for 1. FC Saarbrücken.

 

Who knows what else?

It's mainly in Male Bundesliga that there are many Japanese players.

In Women's Bundesliga, as Hiroshi said, only three (1.FC Köln not being in Bundesliga, i.e. Division 1).

What is so exceptionnal ? There were as many Japanese players in French D1 last season.

I checked the Nadeshiko squad for London-2012. Of the 18 first-line, 3 played in Germany and 1 in France. The rest played in Japan and in no other foreign country. Among the 4 so-called backups 1 played in France.

   Thus, in a sense Gromit is correct that there are Japanese players in France also but given how good the Nadeshiko are, it is a bit surprising that one or two more have not found themselves into other leagues in Europe. Maybe they earn enough in Japan not to make it attractive?

I don't know anyone else. Samewhima and Utsugi played for Montpellier HSC (Sameshima has just gone back to Japan, as you know) and Otaki was and still is playing for Olympique Lyonnais. The language barrier and the cultural differences are very hard to overcome for those players. Saki Kumagai explained that language was a severe handicap for her in Germany.

I suppose that playing in Germany rather than in France will always be  easier in some way for Japanese. Japan and Germany share the same vision of discipline and strict respect of hierarchy. And even about language, Japanese and German have much more things in common than Japanese and French, the building of sentences for instance.

In male Football, I can remember only one Japanese player, Daisuke Matsui who played mainly for Le Mans (I liked him very much, actually).

One can speculate till the cows come home. With such small numbers anything is possible. Maybe German lady players speak slightly easier to understand English than French? Maybe it is personal chemistry? Maybe German lady players are more welcoming and inclusive than French? Allegedly, the Swedish player Sarah Jakobsson finds the general life hard in Russia but likes the money. Maybe Berlin, Frankfurt and Duisburg are easier to live in if you are a Japanese young lady (incl that the natives are friendlier)?

 

The key statistic seems to be that this pattern shows that, maybe, only German and French clubs have the financial strength to get top players. Admittedly, the British isles seem vary of recruiting non-British isles lasses, except for the possible exception of from Spain but as we know the rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain, and it rains a lot in those foggy islands.
