Canada and France must pick themselves up from their semi-final defeats to focus on winning the London 2012 Olympic Bronze medal on Thursday 9th August 2012 (13:00 local time) at the City of Coventry Stadium.
Disappointment for France in their semi-final match, after creating many chances during the game against world champions Japan, they were unable to convert them. The French even had a chance to equalise with a penalty but Bussaglia sent it just wide.
Canada's semi-final was equally disappointing and heartbreaking. The Canadians led USA three times with a monumental Christine Sinclair hat-trick, but each time the US responded with an equaliser. In the final seconds of extra time, Alex Morgan scored the winner for USA and the dream of Olympic gold was over for Canada.
For this bronze medal match maybe France have the slight physical advantage of fresher legs, although the team gave 100%, the Canadians had to endure extra time.
There will be a huge amount of fight from both teams to win the Bronze medal, the chance to stand on the London 2012 Olympic podium, none of the teams will want to return home without a medal after all the efforts they have put into this tournament.

Second : I don't think we can expect a great match. The two teams will be physically very tired after their SF. And, usually, the matches for 3rd place are rarely intense after fierce SF, since both teams are mentally devastated after their defeat. I can't remember any third place match as being a great one.
Of course, I hope this one will be the first !
All French players declared they are determined to go and win the Bronze medal and not the "Chocolate Medal" like last year in Germany.
We'll see... My support will go to Les Bleues with a lot of respect for the Canucks who did a great tournament so far and would have deserved to be Finalist.
The two teams met twice in one year :
- At 2011 WC (first stage), France won 4-0 (Thiney 2x, Abily and Thomis).
- Then earlier this year, France won the Cyprus Cup, beating Canada in Final 2-0 (Necib on penaly, and Delie). Matheson and Filigno, two of the best Canadian players weren't there.
Globally, France and Canada met 9 times.
France won 4, 2 draws and Canada won 3. But Canada didn't win any of the last 5 matches, their last victory against France dating back 2006.
I just hope Canada looses because I read something online and i've never seen a team act like such sore loosers in my life. That really turned me off. They acused teh ref of being biased the whole game and bribed and they said that the US didn't deserve to win. I mean seriously, they came back 3 times and they have the nerve to say things like that? I Hope they loose 10-0.
Sorry to all Canada fans :P
Permalink Reply by Gromit on August 8, 2012 at 16:14 Canadians players and coach were perfectly right in their protest and claim. Only blinded US's fans refused to see the truth. Everybody, everywhere in the world, saw what happened. Yes, yes, yes, Canada was stolen by a shameful refeering. Proofs abund. but ti's probably too humiliating for some US's fans to admit that their cherished team benefited from refeeree's help. USA is a great team with great players and a heavy mental. There is no contest about that. Their players fought hardly, as the Canadians. USA could have won in a regular way maybe. But the undisputable FACT is that the referee GAVE them the equalizer (in addition of many other things, including a forgotten most obvious hand by Rapinoe in her own Penalty area). You can try to deny as much as you want, you can choose to wear blinders if it's easier, you can't deny the facts. Too bad for you, Truth is not on your side even if refeeree was...

Permalink Reply by Women's Soccer United on August 8, 2012 at 16:51 All I was saying that instead of getting there head back in the game they chose to complain about decisions and yes the calls were questionable but thats soccer. You have to deal with whatever the ref decides. So honestly, Canadian fans should stop saying that the ref "gave" them the game.

Gromit is, as always, on the money. The fact that such an eminent referee has been asked to take on this match shows how seriously FIFA takes this matter. Jenny has already refereed one Olympic final as well as this year´s CL final. Those are just the top games I can think of straight off.
It is (highly) unusual for referees to be given top matches having already refereed not only one but several. FIFA might as well have asked either Colina or Frisk if they minded giving them a helping hand.
Let´s trust that the players not only will gird themselves to the task that lies ahead but also conduct themselves as ladies. Ladies´ football can ill afford another contentious match. Canada cannot.
I expect that the match will be played in a comradely spirit of mutual trust. Would that the better team wins.

Permalink Reply by Julia Bic on August 9, 2012 at 3:51 Both teams are probably exhausted but it should be a close one.
I am with you, Emilios, on this one.

I would not worry about either match. The final in last year´s world cup resulted in only one red card. (There was a critically misjudged off-side call against Miyama at 0-0 but seeing that Japan lifted the cup it was of no consequence.)
There was also a red card in the match for the bronze. Both cards were collected by the winning side for what it is worth.
Using Gromits´ statistical methodology, one might conclude that red cards seem good for the ladies´ game. Nevertheless, a match should probably not have too many of them, lest they over-egg the pudding. Too many cooks spoil the broth. Any other clichées come too mind, Crystal Michelle?

I understand the anger for Canadian and American fans but let's not wish a loss on either team. Let them play it out fairly and whoever comes on top comes on top.

Permalink Reply by David Peak on August 9, 2012 at 8:11 I'd like to add a couple of comments regarding the Canadian girls. In their group games Japan were superior, Sweden a little better and S. Africa much worse. Canada crept into the later stages as one of the least-worst teams. That now seems a long time ago. What the last two games, against GB and USA, have proved is that Canada have grown and developed a lot during the course of this tournament. I believe they are now a very good side and have really come together. I agree that most bronze medal affairs are not great – but with Canada's sense of grievance and belief that they should be playing for silver or gold they will be desperate for a medal – even if it is only bronze. What the last two games have also proved to me is that the Canadians have real character and fight. If you add a real togetherness I think it might translate to a good result for them. But, one of the reasons we love this game so much is its unpredictability. A new game is always a new game... and anything is possible.
