Canada knocked out hosts Team GB in the quarter-final of the London 2012 Olympic women's football tournament, they now face CONCACAF rivals USA in the semi-final on Monday 6th August at the famous Old Trafford Stadium (19:45 local time).

USA and Canada will be a rematch of this year's CONCACAF final, where USA won 4-0. These teams also met in their final pre-Olympic send off match (in June 2012), this was a much closer contest and could easily have ended a draw or even a win for Canada.

USA have won all their London 2012 Olympic matches so far whilst Canada suffered a loss to Japan in the group stage and a great comeback draw against Sweden. The most impressive game for Canada was the quarter-final against Great Britain, against a team that were yet to concede in the tournament so far and with a strong crowd of support behind them it could have been daunting for the Canadians.

USA are at their fifth consecutive Olympic semi-final, they will be determined to advance to the final and win its fourth Olympic gold medal (third in a row).

I thought it would be a good game, but holey moley, never dreamed it would be that intense! That's the magic of football that keeps me coming back for more. And it doesn't get much better than that!

Yeah Canada could not have done anything more, it just was not meant to be!

Canada played well, their game plan was better and they were deadly on counter-attacks, but sometimes in football you don't need skills or power to win a game, you need luck!

For the first time i saw Morgan playing football wayback, i always knew that one day she will be the best player, though in this Olympics she was feeding all the balls to Wambach, at last she did what i know she is capable of.......scoring when its necessary.

well done USWNT! So now to the next step, getting that GOLD.

@Lutendo Morris : "Sometimes, you need luck" ? Is that another way to say : "Sometimes you need the referee shamefully on your side" ?

I agree about Morgan, she deserved to score because she played a great game and her goal was beautiful. But the match should have ended 3-2 without this farce that was first a free-kick inside the penalty-area, then the penalty on the following  action. If I were a USWNT, I certainly wouldn't be proud to win in this way.

I do hope the Nadeshiko will do the same than last year at the WC or at the Algarve Cup : beat the US team and win the Gold medal.

Canada won me over to want them to win Bronze. Will be interesting to see if they can bounce back from that.

Completely agree with you!!

I believe the referee gave USA an upper hand, but not intentionally and that's some sort of luck. Japan too was on the back for the dying moment of the game, that was luck.

So it was rude for Canada to loose the game, they did anything right but .......football is a strange game.

So Japan and USA have a chance to win Gold and Silver, France or Canada can still win a Bronze, most of us nearly get our predictions right, is it possible to change them?

Even though John Herdman talked some trash he's a great coach, glad they hired him so Canada can field a top team in 2015. Have to imagine they'll pack those stadiums especially after this game, which is STILL trending all over Twitter. And with some stadiums being so close to the American border, the excitement level could reach 1999 levels. 3 long years away though! Wish there was a Women's Confederations cup or something in between.

What did John Herdman say as "trash words" ?

Saying that the US uses "Highly Illegal" tactics in the box on free kicks/set pieces. But I like it, it adds to the match and brings up the excitement. I like him though, he's a good coach.

I wonder if it was more a way to get his players to be more physical in the box, because they were much more physical today and were able to take away the Wambach threat in there.

It is a cliché that we do not learn from history. (It is said of the great Truman that he was someone who not only read history but learnt from it.) Sadly Canada forgot two lessons:

   1. There are two countries who never give up in sport: Germany and USA.

   2. In soccer, American ladies have repeatedly scored in the dying seconds to snatch either a draw from the jaws of defeat or, as here, victory.

Ms Morgan´s glory illustrates this. In this match she heads home the winner at the end of injury time to the extra time. In last year´s final, she almost scored the winner in the dying seconds of the injury time to extra time but she did not because Ms Iwashimizu stopped her. Of course, Ms Morgan treasures yesterday´s goal but as time goes by she may well treasure even more that it took a red card by the world´s greatest defender to stop Ms Morgan winning the World Cup as a rookie. Praise indeed.

Ms Morgan´s goal is, of course, so far the goal of the competition. It likely will remain so.

To say it was one of the greatest women's game I've seen would be an understatement – it was just one of the greatest games, men or women. I really feel for the Canadian girls, they did everything they could, fought hard and put absolutely everything into the game. They must be devastated – and will awake this morning (if they managed any sleep) with a huge sense of injustice and feelings of what might have been. I won't dwell on the injustice, it's been said already, but it's possible that both teams invested so much physical and mental energy in last night's game that there'll be little left for Thursday's final two games.
