Canada knocked out hosts Team GB in the quarter-final of the London 2012 Olympic women's football tournament, they now face CONCACAF rivals USA in the semi-final on Monday 6th August at the famous Old Trafford Stadium (19:45 local time).
USA and Canada will be a rematch of this year's CONCACAF final, where USA won 4-0. These teams also met in their final pre-Olympic send off match (in June 2012), this was a much closer contest and could easily have ended a draw or even a win for Canada.
USA have won all their London 2012 Olympic matches so far whilst Canada suffered a loss to Japan in the group stage and a great comeback draw against Sweden. The most impressive game for Canada was the quarter-final against Great Britain, against a team that were yet to concede in the tournament so far and with a strong crowd of support behind them it could have been daunting for the Canadians.
USA are at their fifth consecutive Olympic semi-final, they will be determined to advance to the final and win its fourth Olympic gold medal (third in a row).

Permalink Reply by Elena Kelly on August 7, 2012 at 19:45 So you think Abby's counting out loud was unsportsmanlike? That would mean that there was no way the referee wasn't already counting it off in her own head. Abby's counting is no different than a player shouting "foul" when tripped before the referee calls it, imo.

Wambach put the idea in the referee's head. That's not kind sportsmanship. I know it was an important game but that's just unacceptable for players to do to others. It's acts llike this that ruin sports. If you can't play fair, don't play at all.
Permalink Reply by Gromit on August 7, 2012 at 19:49 @A-Solo : your reaction - with all my respects - are typical of one unconditionnal supporter who can't admit to see clearly that his/her team was totally "refeered" on its side. Yes, Canada has been stolen. It's not the first time and not the last time that things like that happen in Football, unfortunately. Since you say that people who protest don't have enough experiience in what you call Soccer and I name Football, I'll just have to precise that I watched my first match on TV in 1963 and in a stadium in 1965. I saw millions of matches of any kind and I have the unbearable pretention to say that I can detect an orientated refeering.
Contrary to Lars who didn't watch the match and is unable to judge it, I saw it with a lot of attention and even passion because it was great. I even commented the events by updating them (you can check) and I signalled right from the start the numerous refereering's mistakes. I was not the only one. Once more, by God, isn't it possible for supporters to be objective sometimes ? Or is Women's Football destined for knowing the same flaws as men's Football ? I hope not.
Permalink Reply by Julia Bic on August 7, 2012 at 19:53 I am at a loss. There are two rules in sport:
Rule 1 -- the referee is always right; &
Rule 2 -- should the referee be wrong, rule 1 applies.
England learnt that in 1986 and 2010. There are, possibly, other examples.

Permalink Reply by A-Hamm on August 7, 2012 at 20:02 While I think the Canadians are wrong to complain considering Melissa Tancredi got away with what should have been a red card, and Herdman wanted the ref to pay attention to what was going on in the box before the game, I don't think they should be banned from the Bronze medal match for complaining.
Permalink Reply by A-Hamm on August 7, 2012 at 20:05 No I agree that it was a bad call (I was also confused when it happened). But its not like the ref didn't let Canada get away with some bad challenges. Great Britain was robbed of a penalty kick as well against Canada. Tancredi should have been given a red card for her stomp on Lloyd's head, but wasn't. It happens, it sucks, but you must carry on with the game. They still could have won like the US did against Brazil last year. I didn't mean to make it sound like I agreed with the call, just trying to point out the other calls that could have went against Canada but didn't.

Permalink Reply by Gromit on August 7, 2012 at 20:10 Lars, Lars, Lars ! How a human being like you, a well-educated and clever man can betray yourself as you do now ? You kept writing on WSU at the opening of the tournament (first stage matches) that refeering was reallly bad and that the guilty referees should be forbidden from any international competitions ! Have you forgotten your own words ? I even came to tell you that your position was too much excessive because errors are human. Have you forgotten ? Do you think that everybody on WSU is brain-washed or ill with Alzheimer and that you can say something on monday and the reverse on tuesday ? Come on ! And now the refeerees are always right ? Or is it Swedish irony that allows you not to express your own opinion (logic, since you haven't seen the match) but does allow you to say something on the topic any way ?

Permalink Reply by Gromit on August 7, 2012 at 20:28 In extra-time, Hope Solo took 10 seconds with ball in hands. Referee let it go and Canadians didn't protest. Just check if you want.
I challenge anyone to show us a case happened in those last 10 years at international level (men or women) whith a referee sanctionning such a foul. In practice, this rule has just been put on the side by all refeering.
But it's not enough. On the unjustified free-kick (asked by US players and particularly Wambach), the referee gives a penalty totally unjustified too and because, again, US players asked for it. Or maybe just because the US team "should" go through to the Final by any means ? I don't put the blame on US players who did their best and fight with all their strength.
This is the result of a permanent campaign pretending than "Soccer" - and accessory Women's Football ;o) - IS Usa. This is THE team from beginning to the end and all other countries are nothing else but simple contenders. That's what I named "arrogance" here before. Just forget that USA has lost the last three World Cups. It's just abnormality. The law of Nature says that USA IS THE country of Women's Football and that is all.
Permalink Reply by Lutendo Morris on August 7, 2012 at 20:37 In Tennis, Basketball,Cricket,Rugby and some of other sports, wrong decisions can be recalled,as they are using computers and Cameras to aid the referee's,but in Football, FIFA doesn't want to spoil the beautiful game, that's why in 1 out of 5 soccer matches the referee's are 10% wrong or worse. This is not the only worst officiated match we had witnessed and it won't be the last.
