France face Japan in the London 2012 Olympic women's football semi-final at Wembley Stadium on Monday 6th August 2012, (17:00 local time).

In the first of the two exciting semi-final fixtures, Olympic debutants France will take on the world champions Nadeshiko Japan.

Both France and Japan finished runners-up in their groups at the London 2012 women's football tournament, France went on to beat Sweden in the quarter-final at Hampden Park, they came from 1-0 down to win 2-1. Japan's quarter-final match was against Brazil at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium a goal in each half secured the victory for the world champions.

In a pre-Olympic friendly match the pair met in Paris where France beat Japan 2-0. Although you can not take much from this international friendly, it may have an effect on the teams when they meet again.

With so much at stake in this semi-final, a win will guarantee the team a chance to compete for a gold medal, how will the teams approach this contest. Will we see the beautiful football we know both these teams can produce, or will their be an air of caution from the two sides.

No matter what happens, it's going to be great to see France and Japan compete at Wembley Stadium and it will be a wonderful experience for the players... Lets hope every effort is made to make sure that Wembley is full of spectators!

Being an equal supporter of Les Bleues and the Nadeshiko, I felt so excited before the friendly match. I can't imagine how I'll do tomorrow at 6 pm (French time)... And with match being played at Wembley !

I do hope the two teams will give their best football and play without too much fear. It would have been the ideal final.

We'll have two great GKs, Miho Fukumoto and Sarah Bouhaddi, very strong defenses with two young powerful central defenders, Wendie Renard and Saki Kumagai along the experimented and always decisive Sonia Bompastor, Aya Sameshima, Laura Georges and Azusa Iwashimizu.  Wonderful technical players in midfield : Aya Miyama and Homare Sawa on one side, Louisa Necib and Gaetane Thiney on the other with Mizuho Sakaguchi (great against Brazil) or Elise Bussaglia and Camille Abily to get the ball back to their teams again and again.

And forward, very talented players too : killers Yuki Ogimi and Marie-Laure Delie, speedy Elodie Thomis, cunning Shinobu Ohno, unpredicatble Mana Iwabuchi, over-talented Eugénie Le Sommer... I won't forget Nahumi Kawasumi or Hiroshi will kill me ;o)

Oh my...

As I already said, I'll probably wait for a French victory, not because it's my country (I don't care about this kind of thing) but because French Women's Football needs more than Japan's a consecration at the present time to boost itself once for good. Even if I'll wear my Nadeshiko jersey all the same... Life is sooo complicate sometimes...

Haha I know, I am a little sad to know that one of these teams will fail to make the final... I too will have the luxury of having neutral admiration and respect for both teams so I am hoping for a brilliant show of women's football and the best team on the day to win.

I just have to go for the Nadeshiko, there's no doubt either team can win, but somehow, when it really matters, the Nadeshiko dig deep and refuse to lose.

Last time was a practice match. Who has learnt the most? Both sides have been put through the wringer but Japan has not lost a match yet while France beat Sweden while Japan only managed a draw.

As I would like to see the demented beavers play the pie-bleues in the final, I would have to vote for France. Go, beavers, go go go!

That's a really good point

If France meet Canada in the final, who do you think/want to win that match?

Canada!  Go, beaverrs, go go go!!

No, no; no no!

Pie-bleues, of course, it would be excellent for world football.  Let the beavers win in their homeland!

The Nadeshiko are fantastically strong mentally speaking and that's one reason amongst many why I love them so much. But be careful, the French's mental is strong too. We saw it last year in WC, particularly against England in QF but also agaisnt USA in SF. Because they play mostly at Lyon who has been winning everything for two years, they hate the simple idea of being defeated. Bompastor, Abily, Bussaglia are fantastic competitors. I don't think they will give in at any moment against Japan, as long as they won't be three goals behind... We could go to extra-time and maybe to penalties...

Yes, you could be right, extra time and penalties are a distinct possibility, there's no doubt it will be a great game, all heart and passion, exactly what football should be, I just hope I get to see Aya Sameshima smiling when the final whistle blows.

Japan's game plan will be to stay back and use any opportunity they will get to score a goal, so they have a lot of quick players to count on, Kawasumi, Ohno and Ogimi are both good players and Miyama will hold back, so i think Japan will slightly get away on this one, while France on the other side, is the best team so far and they are playing good football and i would like them to win Gold or Silver.

I do not understand you when you type :"while France on the other side, is the best team so far".  France took a 2-0 lead against USA only to be trounced 2-4. Without exaggerating, USA is the best team so far. Even Japan were held to two draws.

That does not mean that either Japan or France cannot win the gold medal.  Also, Japan will only stay back if they have to though I think that they will find France a harder nut than either Brazil, Canada or Sweden. I stay with my faith in les Pie-bleues. Avancéz!
