Permalink Reply by Asa on June 26, 2012 at 13:16 Well done to all players who have been selected, but really does this team represent our great Four Nations players ??
Where are the players from Wales ?
Permalink Reply by Women's Soccer United on June 26, 2012 at 13:29 I agree this would have been a great opportunity for the world to see the women's football talent across GB. I feel gutted for the players who were not picked, it is such a great opportunity.

Permalink Reply by Women's Soccer United on June 26, 2012 at 13:36 Does anyone know if Welsh players made themselves available for selection? Just wondering if this could by why no one representing Wales in Team GB?
Permalink Reply by Nick Hay on June 26, 2012 at 13:42 Completely agree - having seen a lot of FAWSL matches I am unable to understand the omission of Jess Fishlock from Bristol (and Wales captain). The two outstanding midfielders (excluding Birmingham City Ladies ones of course! :)) I have seen are undoubtedly Kim Little and Jess Fishlock - neither Jill Scott nor Fara Williams have posed half the threat of these two. I am therefore delighted by Little's inclusion but astonished by Fishlock's exclusion - I am afraid Hope Powell has just stuck with those she knows and favours. Is Kelly Smith really fit enough to play any meaningful role? Her contribution at the World Cup was negligible.
Permalink Reply by Sebastian Kanty on June 26, 2012 at 13:44 just because they have the opportunity too pick from a pool of players from four nations, doesn't mean that they have to pick them. this is after all a tournament, and the single purpose of any tournament is to win, although many have only the slimmest of chances. i don't think coach hope, or any citizen of great britain would look back say: oh well, at least we have players from all the nations, it doesn't matter that we finished tenth.
of course it's a shame that the welsh doesn't have any players in the squad, and that the two nations besides england have so few, but to put it frankly, they are obviously not good enough.
Permalink Reply by Women's Soccer United on June 26, 2012 at 13:51 I agree with you with Jess Fishlock, I was expecting to see her name, also Glasgow City's Lisa Evans, she just earnt a contract with one of the best club sides in the world – Germany’s Turbine Potsdam she must be a talented player to achieve that.
The FA have quoted Hope Powell in saying it was a 'tough task' picking the team. 'No political pressure' in the decision just tasked to 'pick the best squad' - It could be that Hope Powell just has not been able to see the players from the other nations enough??

Permalink Reply by Women's Soccer United on June 26, 2012 at 13:58 Agree with your point Sebastian, Powell has said she has picked the best team to win this tournament and the squad to me looks a strong team who I think will progress far. There is also the disadvantage that we are unable to see most of the players on a regular basis. It will be great to see the outcome of the Team GB v Sweden match on 20th July.

Permalink Reply by Nick Hay on June 26, 2012 at 13:58 I can't really comment on Lisa Evans as I have not seen here play but will take your word for it :) (and transferring to Turbine Potsdam is massively impressive). But I can't see why Hope Powell has not been able to see players from other nations because the vast majority play in FAWSL or the Scottish League and neither is a long trip!
To Sebastian: I am arguing over a specific selection for a specific position where I believe that Jess Fishlock is a better selection than at least two of the players selected based on my observations from watching them.
Permalink Reply by Women's Soccer United on June 26, 2012 at 14:00 I can't argue with that.

Permalink Reply by Women's Soccer United on June 26, 2012 at 14:02 This is interesting (found on Twitter):
Mark Hutchings: Footballer Jess Fishlock tells me she's very disappointed at not making Team GB and surprised that no Welsh players are in Olympic squad. Footballer Jess Fishlock says she fully believes there are Welsh players good enough to be in Team GB squad of 16 English and 2 Scots. Jess Fishlock adds that Team GB is the right way to go to take women's football to the next level. And everyone should back the team.
