Canberra United stay in top spot on the Westfield W-League ladder with a well-earned 2-1 win over the Newcastle Jets at Adamstown Oval on Sunday afternoon.

Great goalkeeping from both Melissa Barbieri and her Canberra counterpart Lydia Williams kept the scoreline at 0-0 at halftime following an exciting opening 45 minutes.

But Canberra broke the shackles with some confident play in the second half with goals from Taryn Hemmings and stand-out striker Michelle Heyman giving the visitors a 2-0 lead after 74 minutes.

The Jets never gave up and did get one back from substitute Rhali Dobson in the 86th minute.

But despite Newcastle pressing hard for a late equaliser, Canberra United held on for a deserved victory.
