Next season not nine clubs will compete in the Eredivisie but eight clubs will play in the Eredivisie. VVV Venlo shared a press release today that the team will fold their women's department. For a couple of interesting reasons.
First, with AJAX and PSV/FCE there is a need of 30 players who can compete on a high level of football. Where do you get all those players? Right, international players or players from a lower division. But that doesn't make the quality better of overall women's football in the Netherlands.
So why did VVV Venlo fold their women's department?
There is a deadline this week, transfermarket closes on June 15th. With that AJAX and PSV/FCE only had a few days to get their players for the new squad for the new season. 2 teams that want to win the championship. And you only get players so quick and who can play on this level from other Eredivisie clubs. No club can sign a whole new team in just a few days, it's almost impossible. So PSV/FCE made contact with a lot of players of VVV Venlo.
On June 8th there was a meeting with both clubs and the KNVB to talk about this problem. VVV Venlo proposed the offer to talk with PSV/FCE about working together to see the possibilities.
On June 11th they talked to the KNVB again to see what opportunities there were and here is the conclusion of this meeting:
- VVV Venlo will take a responsibility to further development of women's football in the Netherlands.
- VVV Venlo finds it important that 2 huge clubs, in this case AJAX and PSV, are part of this development.
- VVV Venlo respects the decision of PSV to compete for the title next season with a high quality team.
- VVV Venlo is aware of the possibility of the a rat race between the two teams, on geographical, qualitative and quantitative level.
So the decision to fold the women's team only for the importance of the development of women's football in the Netherlands. Both teams made an agreement to make this all go a lot easier. So we will probably see a lot of VVV Venlo players going to PSV/FCE.
