UEFA have announced the Olympiastadion in Munich will be the venue for this season's biggest event in women's club football, the UEFA Women's Champions League to be played on Thursday 17th May 2012.
UEFA ambassador Steffi Jones will be a key driver in raising the profile of the event. There will be a number of activities centred around Munich including a ticket sale launch, the UWCL cup handover and a trophy tour as part of her promotional campaign.
Steffi Jones said: "I am proud to be the ambassador of the match that is the highlight in the European women's club football calender. We need club competitions at the highest level such as the UEFA Women's Champions League, to further develop the women's game around Europe. I am sure the final will be a great success and Germany is looking forward to welcoming the finalist teams to Munich in May."
The 2011-12 UEFA Women's Champions League Final will kick off at 18:00 CET with an early kick-off time making the event more family friendly.
UEFA Director of Competitions Giorgio Marchetti said: "UEFA is happy to be able to reach out to the ever-growing women's football fan base, especially the youngest among them. We believe the 6pm kick-off will further attract families and children to the stadium."
Munich will follow Getafe (Madrid) and London as the third host of the UEFA Women's Champions League since the UEFA Women's Cup was relaunched as the UEFA Women's Champions League in 2009/10.
The Munich Olympiastadion was built as the main venue for the 1972 Summer Olympics. With an original capacity of 80,000, the stadium has also hosted many major football matches, including the 1974 FIFA World Cup Final and the final of the UEFA European Football Championship in 1988. The UEFA European Champions Club's Cup Final in 1979 and the UEFA Champions League finals in 1993 and 1997 were also played at the stadium.
This seasons quarter-finals will kick-off with the first-leg matches on 14th-15th March 2012. The clubs facing each other are: WFC Malmo v 1.FFC Frankfurt, Olympique Lyonnais v Brondby IF, 1.FFC Turbine Potsdam v FC Rossiyanka and Arsenal Ladies v Goteborg FC.

Permalink Reply by Sebastian Kanty on January 30, 2012 at 19:26 i would have liked a smaller, soccer only stadium. firstly having tracks on the arena means that all spectators are further away from the pitch. secondly why use an arena with an 70k capacity? there is no-way that all those seats will be filled. a stadium like the one in fulham where the last final went, would have been better. or like the one in vancouver where the concacaf tournament just concluded...a capacity of 25-30k maximum would have been better.
any thoughts?..
Permalink Reply by Women's Soccer United on January 30, 2012 at 20:11 I thought this too, so I am hoping that there is a really good promotional/marketing plan to sale these seats. With the final being hosted in Germany maybe they feel that they can attract the large audiences they achieved at the women's World Cup.
I do a agree a full smaller capacity stadium would create a better atmosphere than a large half-empty one, however I am ever the optimist that they can fill it :D:D lol
Permalink Reply by Sebastian Kanty on January 30, 2012 at 20:44 lol, you be the optimist, i be if not the pessimist then the realist, ugh*..(*grunting like a neanderthal and slapping myself in the chest)...honestly...according to wiki there was just below 49k at the wc final...and now they expect what?...in cases like wc, the marketing is huge and time-consuming...i doubt that they would spend nearly as much resources for a cl final, and a womens final at that..sorry, but let us be real...the only reason for the venue must somehow be related to the bundesliga schedule...just my guess..
on a sidenote: it's funny that germany's group in the wc had the olympic stadium in berlin, and the game between germany and canada was sold out (73,680)...what if the germans would have reached the final? why not schedule the final in the biggest stadium in berlin...the final in frankfurt, between japan-usa game had a stadium capacity of 48,837....
