The WPSL has announced the expansion of the WPSL Elite League for the 2013 season, to include a Western Division.

The first two Western teams to join the Elite League are the California Storm of Sacramento and the San Diego SeaLions, two of the original teams in the WPSL. More teams will be announced as final decisions are made.

This makes sense. The USA ought to consider having 8 or even 16 regional leagues. The winners and runners ups in those leagues could then play a Champions of Leagues tournament -- like a giant Stanley Cup or play it during the next season a the CL in Europe is done.

The populations of Europe vary between 1,3M (Estonia) to 80M (Germany), and then there is Russia. A few countries are 35-40M or more (Poland, Italy, Spain, UK, France & Germany & Russia) but most are 15M or less.

The distances in Europe are short. It is as far from the north to the south of Sweden as from there to south of Italy. Indeed, Sweden was half the border to the Communists in the cold war. It is difficult to fly for more than 3 hours and stay within Europe. Holland is the size of NJ.

Best of luck with these new leagues. High time for sponsors to stump up $ 2-3M per team. This should be child´s play in a land as wealthy as the USA but judging by past history is not. Wonder why? What is the reason?

Department of Correction -- Turkey is a member of UEFA and at 75 million one of the larger countries. It is getting its ladies´ football also organised (please see Asa´s posting).

One of the reasons everyone is so excited about America´s ladies professional football rising like a fenix is that the previous versions had an enormous impact on the development of the ladies´ game internationally.

Both Gromit and Hiroshi have provided lists of the many French and Japanese ladies who played in USA, and from Sweden both Caroline Seger and Therese Sjögran had a spell there (though not Lotta Schelin, as far as I can see) not to mention Marta who spent her formative years playing for Umeå in its glory days.

Thus, everyone wants to see a strong and healthy professional league upp and running again in USA.

Er... no... not everyone, Lars... Good if it succeeds but if it doesn't... it won't make any change for me or - at least to my eyes - for Women's football in the rest of the world. A current and painful lumbago + migraine prevent me to go further now but I' started writing on something, from FIFA's analysis of post 2011 WC situation. My contribution will be  posted here probably in three parts. Can't say exactly when.

Gromit is busy felting a bag, having knitted a scarf. This hound is on a roll. I agree with Richard: let´s have your thoughts before the end of the Olympics.
