We were very excited when WPS star McCall Zerboni
agreed to take part in the WSU interview!
McCall currently plays for WNY Flash in the WPS
league. She is a very talented player who impacts the games both
assisting and scoring goals. McCall is a real team player, which is
confirmed in this interview and she has a a genuine love and
passion for the game!
WSU: How old were you when
you first started playing soccer and who or what inspired or
influenced you to play?
MZ: I started playing when i was about 4 years old.. and
i had an older brother that played and I wanted to be just like
him. So when I went to watch his games, i would practice on the
sideline to be like one of the boys (I was a major tomboy!)
WSU: What has been your
career highlight and lowlight to date, and
why?
MZ: My career highlight would probably have to be, 2009
WPS inaugural match with the Los Angeles Sol. to walk out in a
roaring stadium my first game ever as a professional and in my home
town was an unbelievable experience.
My career low would have to be anytime i lost in the playoffs,
the Final 4, or a championship game. my dream is to always be the
best and be a champion. my heart gets broken every time i
lose.
WSU: You are currently unable to
play due to a foot injury, how is the recovery going and how
difficult has it been to watch the Flash play from the
sidelines?
MZ: Battling this foot injury has been tough, its so early on
in the season when most the excitement is happening. i was
definitely bummed to miss the Flash's professional debut but was
really proud of my team. watching from the sidelines at practice
and in games is always frustrating but it rekindled a fire in my
heart! i love soccer.
(Since completing the WSU Q&A we are pleased to say McCall
has recovered from her foot injury and scored two goals in her
recent WNY Flash appearance against Boston Breakers,

WSU: How would you describe
yourself as a player?
MZ: I would say im hard working, intense and aggressive, the
team always comes before myself. I try to instill that in others as
well because its important to a club's success.
WSU: What is your impression of
WNY Flash as a team?
MZ: The Flash is such a talented squad and we have the best
attacking front-line in the league and our defense is just as solid
to back it up. We aim to play more of a Barcelona style, because we
have the personnel to do so. We're all very technical and have a
lot of speed as well.
McCALL ZERBONI'S TEAM MATES
(WNY Flash)
WSU: Biggest joker at your club?
MZ: Brittany cameron
WSU: Most skilful player?
MZ: Marta
WSU: Quickest player?
MZ: Gemma Davison/Ali
Riley
WSU: Most intelligent
player?
MZ: Candace Chapman/Christine
Sinclair
WSU: Worst dancer?
MZ: Ashlynn Harris
WSU: Worst taste in music?
MZ: Alex Morgan
WSU: How do you stay
healthy, fit and active during the soccer offseason?
MZ: In the off season I work with the best, Almon "G Man" Gunter
who is a big time trainer and dear mentor of mine out of
Florida.
WSU: What advice would you give
to someone thinking about getting involved in women and
girl's soccer?
MZ: My advice would be Go for it! I can't tell you how many
people tried to stop me or how many situations could have brought
me down but I stuck with it and i've never been happier that I did.
There's a thousand million catrillion people in this world that
play soccer, but none of those people play like You. Every one has
something to offer to the game. soccer is beautiful in that
way.
WSU: What are
your hobbies/interests when you are not playing
soccer?
MZ: I really enjoy spending time with my family and friends when I
get the opportunity and I always make some time for God. I love
art, music, and just being around people and enjoying the
aesthetics of every day life. I can be very spontaneous and i'm
always on the search for a good time!
WSU: In your opinion, how
has women's soccer progressed since you first started playing
and what would you like to see for the future of
women's soccer?
MZ: Since I was a little girl, soccer has progressed so much.
It is the #1 sport here in American for women and I have been so
blessed to be a part of that growth. I believe it has a much
brighter future and a lot of potential to change the world but
sometimes people fail to recognize how big it really is because
there's so much other nonsense we get distracted by (social media,
"reality" tv, etc.) But i'm so proud to be a womens soccer player
and would love more than anything to have my nieces and daughters
to feel the same experience and even on a greater scale.
WSU: Are you concerned about
how the impact of losing players to the women's World Cup in
June will effect WNY Flash's WPS season?
MZ: I think we will miss those individuals dearly when they
are gone for the World Cup, but as far as on the field our roster
is deep enough to where we are not concerned about our success
dropping off.
WSU: Tell us something we do
not know about you?
MZ: I am a twin! and I come from a family of 7 children! I
love roses and shoes and i'm a sucker for a delicious latte.
