Newcastle United Women’s Football Club Reserves 0 v Sheffield FC Ladies Reserves 1
NUWFC Reserves beaten by the bounce of a ball against Sheffield
Match Report by Stuart Dick @StuOnSport
In a game dominated by Newcastle United’s Women, it was Sheffield’s Kerry Armstrong who scored the winner, after her long range effort bounced over Newcastle Keeper, Michaela Raine.
On an unseasonably warm day at Cowgate’s Pinpoint Sports Complex, it was Sheffield who created the first chance as a well crossed ball was fired over from 12 yards out. Newcastle went up the other end and created a chance of their own, as Stephanie Shaw’s strike was blocked.
Newcastle began to press and won a corner on 7 minutes. Charlotte Wilson whipped in a wonderful ball onto the forehead of midfielder Sam Campion, but she was unable to keep her header down.
Sheffield then had a golden chance to take the lead as right winger Ashton Crouch got in behind the Newcastle defence, but her weak attempt was easily saved by Raine. Crouch had another chance on 15 minutes, but this time she fired well wide.
Newcastle should have taken the lead on 19 minutes when the battling Jasmine Petre won the ball off the Sheffield Centre Half and was one on one with the ‘keeper. Unfortunately she was unable to keep he shot down.
The lucky Sheffield goal came on 25 minutes. Kerry Armstrong shot from 35 yards, with very little power behind it. The ball bounced 8 yards out from goal, and with ‘keeper Raine in two minds the ball looped over her head and into the top corner, an extremely unfortunate way to go behind.
Newcastle began to press, but had to be aware of Sheffield counter-attacks. Robyn Parker at the centre of the Toon defence made several crucial tackles to deny goal scoring opportunities. At the other end prolific striker Shaw was pressurising the Sheffield defence, chasing through ball after through ball, but was unable to finish.
Just before the half Campion, with some great individual skill, played in Shaw once again with an exquisite pass, but Shaw’s shot was blocked by the Sheffield defence.
Kayleigh Appleton replaced Cara Moran at half time after she picked up a first half knock. Newcastle began the half the brighter side once again, with right winger Leonie Kennedy playing in a fantastic ball, but once again there was no end product.
Newcastle Centre Back almost scored a 40 yard strike soon after. Her looping strike seemed to have caught the opposing ‘keeper out, but unfortunately the ball went just centremetres over.
Sheffield should have made it two on 56 minutes as Armstrong broke the offside trap, but her finish left much to be desired.
Newcastle looked extremely threatening from a series of corners, each resulting in desperate goalmouth scrambles from the away side. Substitute Ellie Hall almost capitalized on one of these scrambles, but her shot was blocked by an on rushing Sheffield defender.
With only 10 minutes remaining, Campion broke through after Steph Shaw’s lay-off, but her strike went agonisingly wide. Newcastle tried and tried, but couldn’t breakthrough the stubborn Sheffield backline and the game ended in a 0-1 scoreline.
