The Dutch Women Eredivisie is saved!

This will probably be the last update about the Dutch Eredivisie. With a big happy ending!! Yes that’s right the league is saved. How? It was a big challenge for all the clubs and players but they did a great job.

I will give you all the details what happened after my latest blog on April 16th. The league was in big trouble. There were only 5 teams for next season and for a ‘’normal’’ competition you need 6 teams. So at that moment the league was supposed to come to an end next week. No new season and a lot of good players, including Dutch international with no club. And also young girls who can’t play on a professional (semi) level in their own country. I was sad and angry that SC Heerenveen, the last team, was going to pull the plug after this season.

But none other than SC Heerenveen will be the 6th team next year!! So what changed? A week after I wrote my last blog the Dutch FA (KNVB) kind of challenged the club. The club had 1 week to raise 50.000 euro for sponsorships and such. The players did their job, the sponsor committee did and they saved the league!

As I’m not the best in English I can’t give you all the information about what happened the last few weeks because a lot happenened. And if I need to translate everything I will need a few hours.

So there will be only 6 teams next season. ADO Den Haag, FC Twente, FC Utrecht, SC Heerenveen, VVV Venlo and FC Zwolle. But there are a lot of new teams that want to join, maybe next season or in 2012.

I’m happy that the league made it after a few tough months. With the new league set up, games on Friday, free market for players and such I’m interested how the league will be next season. And the qualifying matches for the European Championship are also coming up after this summer so I think they made a good decision.

As for now I’m done with these series of blogs about the Eredivisie but I will report about the new season in August!
