Comment by Gromit on July 10, 2012 at 22:17 Of course, Lars, if you compare the French ratio viewers/global population with the Swedish one, you can think it's very low here. But the view will be biased. Actually... it's huge ! Those TV figures made the headers in the main French newspapers. Don't forget that 95% of French people didn't even know there was a French feminine football team ! And we can imagine that we would have had at least three times more of viewers if such matches were broadcasted on the main TV channels and not on Direct 8 that nobody watches usually (it's really crappy !).
If I'm not wrong, the matches of France at the OG will be on the public service (the State owned channels) and that should be a good test, particularly if France goes up to SF.
Naturally, that will remain far from the records : 22,2 millions for France-Portugal in SF at 2006 WC, 22,1 for the finale France-Italy (2006, that was 80% in audience share ! ), 21,4 millions for the 2000 Euro Finale (France-Italy already) and 20,6 millions for France-Brazil (1998 WC finale).
But in the future... let's say about 30 years... who knows ?

Comment by Gromit on July 10, 2012 at 17:54 Answering Lars' question about French TV figures on broadcasting of matches, this is what I could collect :
The matches are shown on Direct 8, a private but free-access channel (now broadcasted through TNT, that is with a very high quality) :
Between 2009 and 2010 (qualifications matches for the 2011 WC), an average between 300,000 and 400,000 people watched the matches of Les Bleues..
France-Serbia was the first match broadcasted in prime-time, August 25th 2009 : 700,000.
2011 World Cup in Germany :
QF - France-England (1-1, France wins at penalties) at 5.45 pm on a Saturday = 1,1 Million with a peak at 2,4 Millions at the penalties shoot-out, 8% in part of the audience-market). We have to add 412,000 watchers on Eurosport (not a free channel).
SF : France - Usa (1-3) at 5.45 pm on a Wednesday = 2, 43 Millions, with a peak at 3,2 Millions (17,4% in part of audience market).
Qualifications matches for Euro 2013 : between 720,000 and 940,000.
Israel-France (0-5), September 15th 2011 : 765,000 (with a peak at 1 Million) with the concurrence at the same time of three big C1 matches (including Lille, Lyon and Real Madrid).
The friendly match France-Poland (august 24th 2011) : 935,000.
2011 C1 finale - Lyon-Potsdam (2-0) : 1,2 Million (5%) with a peak at 1,9 Million.
2012 C1 Finale - Lyon-Frankfurt (2-0) (at 5.45 pm) : 790,000 with a peak at 1,3 Million at 7.45 pm.
October 1rst 2011 : for the first time, a match of French League in prime-time on a public channel (France 4), Lyon-Saint Etienne : 484,000 (on a saturday night).
The usual average part of audience of Direct 8 (out of feminine football) is between 2 and 2,5%.
The channel pays for each match between 40,000 and 50,000 euros.
Let's note than Eurosport took the exclusivity of Lyon's matches in C1 for next season. Eurosport being not a public and/or free channel, it's pure shame !
The French Federation speaks a lot about promoting feminine football but as soon as they can sell the rights to a crypted channel, it does it. I'm afraid that sooner or later, even the French national team matches won't be shown in a free way. I trust the new government to keep the current situation anyway.
Do you know that from next season, there will be NO matches from Men C1 broadcasted in France out of paid channels ? None. That will be the first time. Including of course the matches of French teams (Montpellier, PSG and Lille)....

Comment by Asa on July 10, 2012 at 0:08 Good point Lars,PR in the women's game is a must, world wide they are some great women's matches and tournaments which are just not advertised any where.Yes trying to get information on games and tournaments is at times almost impossible, you only have to look at some National teams websites they are not updated sometimes for weeks.I am just so pleased that here on WSU we have a great team who try their hardest to gather as much information as they can,but most of all I would say a great big thank you to all our members world wide who are just Amazing with the great content they share with us week in and week out.
Comment by Asa on July 9, 2012 at 21:20 Sorry Lars but as good as we are at WSU,some times there are tournaments that we only get the information just before it starts.Lars did you know this tournament was starting a few weeks ago ?
