Women’s Super League team Chelsea head to the South coast to face Southern Premier League team Brighton in a friendly game at Worthing Stadium.
Chelsea kick off the match and immediately conceed a free kick within their own half. Brighton use the free kick to loop the ball into the Chelsea area, the Chelsea defending is deemed to be a foul and Brighton are awarded a penalty just 2 mins after kick off.
Kim Whitcombe steps up to take the penalty, her shot is blasted over the bar, and the chance to take the lead against the WSL side is wasted.
The match continues to be fast past, both teams look evenly matched. Chelsea look a little more comfortable passing the ball around compared to Brighton who looked a little nervous at the back.
15 mins into the match Chelsea put in a great cross to set up their striker unfortunately the whistle was blown for offside as the ball was then kicked into the net.
Brighton look impressive, making numerous attacks resulting in lots of long range shots but not really testing the keeper.
25 mins and the deadlock is broken with a fantastic long range shot from Sophie Perry. Nothing the Brighton keeper could have done to stop the stunning strike.
Shortly after Brighton kick off, they make a break down the wing but strong defending from Stoney stops the danger.
Many changes to both teams were made during the second half, including a goalkeeper change from Chelsea.
The second half again was evenly matched, both teams created great chances but were not able to get the finishing touches needed.
The match finished with a Chelsea 1 – 0 victory. A very entertaining, competitive match to watch, both teams battling hard. Overall, Chelsea were worthy winners, they looked more comfortable and created slightly more chances throughout the whole match, with which the Brighton keeper dealt with very well. The spirit and fight from Brighton was very impressive there was no way they were going to back down and give Chelsea a easy match!
