Are Manchester City set to win the FAWSL this season?

The FA Women’s Super League is well underway and Manchester City are looking strong ahead of what could be a defining season for the club.

Nick Cushing’s side finished second to Chelsea in the 2015/16 campaign but that was enough to secure Champions League football for the first time in their history – a fantastic achievement to say the least and one that Cushing has achieved in a remarkably short space of time. Without doubt, City are one of the emerging forces in women’s football and they have their eyes set on becoming an elite side in the game.

However, the league title remains City’s number one priority this season and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see Steph Houghton and co go all the way. Chelsea were on another level last year but City now have the resources and the talent to challenge for the title or, at the very least, become viable competition for that Chelsea squad. And, taking into account recent results, City’s incredible run at the end of the previous campaign shows that they are capable of putting a title challenge together. All you need to do is take a look at the current league table to see just how dominant and strong Manchester City are…

As the race for the crown starts to gather momentum, punters can place a bet on the FAWSL and other football markets at and many bettors will fancy City to provide a solid challenge to Chelsea’s dominance. In the recent history of the competition, Arsenal were the most successful team in the sport but the emphasis has moved away from the Gunners. It is now more or less set to be a straight-up dogfight between Manchester City and Chelsea for the crown – and that was proved by City’s recent Conti Cup semi-final victory over Arsenal Ladies.

On paper, Manchester City’s team is phenomenal. Cushing has built a fantastic side at the Academy Stadium and it is only a matter of time until the club announce themselves as a major player in women’s football. With the likes of Jill Scott, Toni Duggan and Karen Bardsley in the squad, City have a fantastic corps of English talent and this will help the Citizens in their pursuit of the domestic title. After all, they have developed an understanding at both club and international level…

At the time of writing, City are seven points clear at the top of the table but there is still plenty of work to be done if the Blues are going to lift the FAWSL title. Scotland’s Jane Ross has already netted four goals this season and her prowess in front of goal could be the deciding factor as they hunt a maiden Super League crown. With Duggan and Ross in attack, City have two competent forwards and it is hard to imagine Cushing’s side struggling for goals throughout the campaign.

On current form, Manchester City have the potential to cruise to the FAWSL crown. Nick Cushing’s side are by far and away the strongest team in the competition and that is why they have established a gap between themselves and their closest rivals. City have already booked their place in the Conti Cup final and are on the verge of a maiden league title and two triumphs in major events would certainly constitute a successful season as Cushing looks to build as dynasty at the Academy Stadium.
