Result of the draw for Round 1 of the Asian Qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Women’s Football Tournament.
The official draw for Round 1 of the Asian Qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Women’s Football Tournament took place at AFC House on Thursday.
The AFC qualifiers for the 2020 Olympic Games will be played over three rounds. Round 1 features 18 teams (who were drawn into four groups), fixtures are set to start in November 2018. Round 2 will see the inclusion of Vietnam and Uzbekistan who received automatic qualification due to their ranking. The final round will include Australia, Korea DPR, Korea Republic, China PR and Thailand, who have all automatically qualified for the final round as Asia’s top five ranked teams.
The reigning AFC Women’s Asian Cup champions Nadeshiko Japan have already qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games as the hosts and will therefore not be taking part in the Asian Qualifiers.
The draw for Round 1 of the Asian qualifiers put debutants Mongolia in Group A alongside Chinese Taipei, Philippines, Singapore and Tajikistan. Two-time WAFF Women’s Championship winners United Arab Emirates are in Group B with Islamic Republic of Iran, Hong Kong, Macau and Lebanon. In Group C, SAFF Women’s Championship title holders India face, Nepal, Myanmar and Bangladesh. Hosts of the 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup Jordan are in Group D alongside Indonesia, Palestine and Maldives.
The winners and runners-up of each group, along with the two best third-placed teams will advance to Round 2.
