Beautiful photos capturing the historic moment Iranian women were allowed to watch the World Cup in same stadium as men.

For 38 years, women have been banned from watching men’s sporting events in Iran… Then history was made as men and women gathered at Tehran’s Azadi Stadium to watch Iran take on Spain in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

However, it nearly didn’t happen, just hours before the gates were to open the authorities cancelled the event.

Despite the announcement, many fans turned up at the Azadi Stadium anyway in protest, photos were shared on Twitter of male and female football fans sitting and standing whilst a row of police blocked the entrance to the stadium.

It was about after an hour that the police gave way and the stadium doors were opened for men, women and children who had bought tickets.

An historic moment and a positive change that gives us hope that the rules around watching sporting events in Iran will be changed permanently.

Enjoy these beautiful photos capturing the moment the ban gave way after 38 years, giving enjoyment and uniting ALL football fans who together gave support for their team, their country, on their World Cup journey.
