Chicago Red Stars Forward Christen Press Voted NWSL Player of the Week
Chicago Red Stars forward Christen Press was voted the National Women’s Soccer League Player of the Week for Week 6 of the 2017 NWSL season.
Press, 28, had a goal and an assist to lead the Red Stars to a 3-1 victory against the North Carolina Courage at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park as Chicago earned its first road win of the season and extended their overall unbeaten run to three games.
The Los Angeles, Calif. native converted from the penalty spot in the 30th minute to open the scoring before setting up Sofia Huerta for a goal in the 37th minute with a well-placed chip into her teammate that put the midfielder in position to send a curling shot into the top corner of the net. Press played all 90 minutes in the win – registering three shots on target, while creating two chances and completing 86.2 percent of her passes, according to Opta.
The goal for the U.S. international was her second of the year and it was the first time she scored the opening goal of a game in 2017 after doing so on four separate occasions last season. She has played all 540 minutes so far this season for the Red Stars and leads the league with 14 shots on goal and ranks second in overall shots with 23.
The assist for Press was just the third assist of her NWSL career and the first since she provided the helper on a 65th-minute goal by Jen Hoy in a 2-0 win against the Western New York Flash on Aug. 29, 2015.
It is the second time Press has been honored as the NWSL Player of the Week and the ninth time a Red Stars player has won the award. She previously earned the accolade for Week 2 of the 2015 NWSL season.
The Chicago Red Stars will return to action Saturday, May 27 at 4 p.m. ET against the North Carolina Courage at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill.
