Chicago Red Stars Forward Christen Press Voted NWSL Player of the Week
Chicago Red Stars forward Christen Press was voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the media for Week 2 of the 2015 NWSL season.
Press, 26, scored two goals, including a crucial stoppage-time goal, and added an assist to carry the Red Stars to a 3-2 victory in their season opener at home against Seattle Reign FC on Saturday evening at Village of Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex in Lisle, Ill.
The California native scored her first goal of the game in the 32nd minute off a header from Vanessa DiBernardo in behind the defense, putting the Red Stars on the board with a score of 1-1.
The Red Stars continued to put pressure on Reign FC and goalkeeper Hope Solo with another goal in the 35th minute by Jen Hoy with an assist from Press. However, neither team was able to find an open opportunity going into the second-half with a score of 2-2 and the game began to look like it was going to end in a draw.
Spectacularly, the U.S. international found the back of the net during stoppage-time in the 91st minute, running onto a pass from Hoy past the defense and then getting the ball past Solo. That ended the match for the Red Stars, giving them three points and capping a beautiful performance by Press.
Press is the third Red Stars player to be honored as the NWSL Player of the Week since the 2013 season when midfielder Lori Chalupny received the honor in Week 10 and forward Jen Hoy earned the selection in Week 19.
The Chicago Red Stars will return to action Saturday, April 25 at 8:30 p.m. ET against the Portland Thorns FC at Village of Lisle-Benedictine University Stadium in Lisle, Ill.
The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a selection of journalists that cover the league on a consistent basis.
