Continental Tyres WNL Shield Series 3 Round-Up.
Wexford Youths booked their place in the Continental Tyres Women’s National League Shield final with a 5-0 victory over Cork City WFC.
UCD Waves were also victorious in Group A as they overcome Kilkenny United WFC 6-1, while in Group B Galway WFC drew 4-4 with Peamount United.
“We are absolutely thrilled to be through the final and the chance for our first piece of silverware of the season,” smiled Wexford boss Will Doyle. “We want to build on what was a fantastic season last year. The aim now is just to keep notching up the victories.”
Captain Kylie Murphy opened the scoring inside 28 seconds for Wexford with Republic of Ireland international Carol Breen doubling their advantage two minutes later.
Emma Hansberry’s free-kick made it three on 25 minutes before Shauna Wall’s made it 4-0 on half time. Breen then wrapped it up late on with her second goal.
Elsewhere, Aine O’Gorman bagged a hat-trick as UCD Waves ran in six goals in their victory over Kilkenny United in Buckley Park.
O’Gorman and Julie-Ann Russell both found the net in the opening 25 minutes for Eileen Gleeson’s side before Jenny O’Keefe grabbed Kilkenny’s first goal since joining the WNL.
O’Gorman restored UCD’s two-goal advantage four minutes before half-time with Orla Nolan extending their lead on 78 minutes. Ciara Grant made it 5-1 before O’Gorman finished things off.
On Saturday night, Peamount United came back from a three-goal deficit to claim a 4-4 draw in gripping battle with Galway at Eamonn Deacy Park.
Just three minutes were on the clock when Lisa Casserly struck for the hosts but the lead didn’t last long as Amber Barrett levelled for the visitors. That was just the start of the scoring though.
Keara Cormican restored Galway’s lead on 17 minutes and Lynsey McKey added to it. But Peamount stormed back with Sara McKevitt, Lauren Kealy, and Danielle Murray all on target.
Shelbourne Ladies’ game with Castlebar Celtic was called off.
