Washington Spirit defender Crystal Dunn Voted NWSL Player of the Week
Washington Spirit defender Crystal Dunn was voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the media for Week 3 of the 2015 NWSL season.
Dunn, 22, scored two goals in the first half of the game to provide an early lead over their opponents and helped lead the Spiritto a 3-1 win over Sky Blue FC on Sunday evening at Yurcak Field in Township, N.J.
The New York native’s first goal came in the early minutes of the game, when Dunnwas able to find the back of the net with a pass from teammate Francisca Ordega, giving Washington a 1-0 lead.
The Spirit defended well during the first half and continued to look for opportunities. In the 40th minute, Dunnrecorded her second goal of the game when she found herself in a one-v-one situation with Sky Blue goalkeeper Brittany Cameron. Washington ended the half with a 2-0 lead over Sky Blue.
In the opening minutes of the second half, Spirit midfielder Christine Nairn helped stretch the Spirit’s advantage with the final goal of the game, which was once again assisted by Ordega. Sky Blue’s Nadia Nadim was able to pull back a goal in the 68 th minute, but the match would end with a final score of 3-1.
Dunnis the third Spirit player to be honored as the NWSL Player of the Week and the first since 2014 when former Washington forward Jodie Taylor received the honor in Week 6. In 2013, midfielder Diane Matheson earned the selection in Week 18 of the 2013 NWSL season.
The Washington Spirit will return to action Saturday, May 2 at 10:00 p.m. ET against the Seattle Reign FC at Moda Pitch at Memorial Stadium in Seattle, Wash.
