Japan at the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup 2014

Japan move to the top of Group C after beating Spain 2-0 in their opening match in front of 2,250 fans.

Mexico and Nigeria are also off to a great start, having both won their opening group games.

Group C: New Zealand 1-1 Paraguay

Paraguay earned a 1-1 draw against New Zealand in their opening match after Sheryl Barrios header in the 84th minute cancelled out Daisy Cleverley’s 69th minute goal.

Both New Zealand and Paraguay made some defensive errors but neither side were really able to capitalise on each others mistakes. The majority of the match was played in the midfield.

Result: New Zealand 1-1 Paraguay

Group C: Spain 0-2 Japan

Japan scored in both halves of the game to secure all three points against Spain in their opening FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2014 group match.

The ‘Young Nadeshiko’ started the match strong, with Shiho Matsubara going just inches away from breaking the deadlock in the 5th minute.

Spain looked unable to create many opportunities against the well organised Japan side.

Result: Spain 0-2 Japan

Group D: Mexico 4-0 Colombia

Mexico comfortably earned three points in their opening game after defeating Colombia 4-0!

Viridiana Salazar scored the fastest goal of the tournament so far, having put the ball in the back of the net in the first minute. It only took three minutes later for Mexico to double their lead against the stunned Colombia.

Pressure continued from Mexico in the first half and Janae Gonzalez extended the lead to 3-0. Cinthia Huerta scored the fourth goal in the 71st minute. Although Mexico dominated possession, Colombia did have some shots on target but were unable to score pass Emily Alvarado.

Result: Mexico 4-0 Colombia

Group D: China PR 1-2 Nigeria

Nigeria beat China PR 2-1 in front of 4,300 fans at the Estadio Alejandro Morera Sota.

Nigeria broke the deadlock in this contest in the 21st minute through Rasheedat Ajibade striking the rebound from a good Peng Shimeng initial save.

The Africans doubled their lead in the second half with a header from Uchenna Kanu in the 63rd minute. China quickly responded as Yugiu Fan converted a Liu Yan’s cross.

The Chinese tried to find the equaliser but could not

Result: China PR 1-2 Nigeria
Goals: Rasheedat Ajibade 21′, Uchenna Kanu 63′, Yuqiu Fan 64′
