African Women's Championship 2014 day one

Day one at the African Women’s Championship 2014.

The African Women’s Championship 2014 kicks off today at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek, Namibia. Group A get the tournament underway.

Eight teams will compete in the 9th African Women’s Championship, Namibia 2014. The top three finishers at this tournament will represent the continent at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015 in Canada, view the African Women’s Championship Groups.

For the first time in the history of the championship, the title holder will play no part in the final tournament. The reigning champions Equatorial Guinea were edged by Cote d’Ivoire.

Hosts Namibia will kick off the tournament against Zambia, details of Day One’s African Women’s Championship action is outlined below.

Day 1 Group Fixtures – 11 October 2014

Group A

Full-time: Namibia 2-0 Zambia

Goals: Rita Williams 5′, Thomalina Adams 24′

Stadium: Sam Nujoma Stadium, Windhoek

Namibia and Zambia are both making their maiden appearances at the biennial championships. These two teams will feature as the opening match of the tournament.

Group A

Full-time: Nigeria 4-2 Cote d’Ivoire

Goals: Sunday 11′, Tiegnou 20′(PEN), Diakite 54′(OG), Oparanozie 74′, 88′, Lohoues 75′

Stadium: Sam Nujoma Stadium, Windhoek

This will mark the second appearance at the final tournament for Cote d’Ivoire ‘Les Elephantes’.
Nigeria ‘Super Falcons’ have been champions of the African Women’s Championship a record six times! (1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2010).
