Day Two at the SheBelieves Cup 2018
It’s Matchday 2 at the 2018 SheBelieves Cup, which sees USA face France and Germany take on England.
It was a somewhat disappointing start to France’s SheBelieves Cup title defence as England earned an easy 4-1 victory at the MAPFRE Stadium. In a normally closely fought contest between these two top European sides, England broke the deadlock early through Toni Duggan in the sixth minute. England ended the first half 3-0 ahead with Jill Scott and Jodie Taylor joining Duggan on the scoresheet. France never looked confident in defence throughout this fixture and just two minutes into the second half, Fran Kirby increased the Lionesses’ lead to 4-0. Gaetane Thiney’s appearance in the second half gave Les Bleues a boost but France never looked like getting back into the game despite a consolation goal in the 77th minute. It was a fantastic performance and victory for England’s new head coach Phil Neville, a very positive start.
USA and Germany were the later fixture of the opening day matches. It was a fast pace start to the game with Germany coming close to going ahead. It was Megan Rapinoe who did find the back of the net on fifteen minutes and the hosts were able to hold onto their 1-0 lead for the rest of the match.
As we head into matchday 2, England (3 points) sit top of the table with a strong goal difference ahead of USA (3 points), followed by Germany and then France who are both yet to get points on the board.
