Detroit Sun FC get four points from two matches on the weekend

After drawing Michigan Legends FC 0–0 on Saturday, the Sun dominated Toledo Villa FC 5-2 the following evening.

Detroit Sun FC’s second home game at Ultimate Soccer Arena in Pontiac, Michigan ended in a scoreless draw against the Michigan Legends on Saturday, June 24. 24 hours later the Sun travelled down to Sylvania, Ohio to take on Toledo Villa FC.

After an early flurry of attacks, Detroit got on the scoreboard in the 16’ minute when Man of the Match and captain Dani Evans(Rochester, Mich./ Oakland University)played in Annie Walker (Grand Blanc, Mich/Rice University) behind the Toledo back line where she dribbled to the end line and found Ali Amante (Windsor, Ontario Canada/Oakland University)to tap in. The Detroit Sun doubled their lead in the 36’ minute when Justine Lynn (Grosse Point, Mich/Indiana University) played a long ball that ricocheted off of a Villa defender right into the path of the 2016 Bulgarian Women Footballer of the Year Evdokia Popadinova (Hadzhidimovo, Bulgaria/ University of Northwestern Ohio) who finished 1v1 with the goalkeeper. Detroit added to the score line just at the stroke of half-time when Amante found Walker in space and she finished high to the far post to make it 3-0 going into half time.

The second half brought the debut of Madison Clem (Okemos, Mich/Michigan State University) who is the younger sister of the Detroit Sun’s starting goalkeeper Caitlyn Clem (Okemos, Mich/University of Wisconsin) who played in the first half. MadisonClemhad a 100% completion rate on her distribution and made five big saves in the second half to contribute to her debut victory. Toledo found some life in this half though when they scored in the 60’ minute through Skylar Fleak. Captain Evans didn’t like Toledo taking away their clean sheet though, as she took matters into her own feet when she picked up a loose ball in the 62’ minute and rifled a shot past the Villa keeper to make the score 4-1. The 75’ minute brought success to another Detroit Sun first team debutant when Samantha Alatto (Sterling Heights, Mich/Schoolcraft College) finished a wide service from DevynBrough(Commerce Township, Mich./Central Michigan University). The final goal of the seven-goal thriller was scored in the 84’ minute again by Toledo Villa’s Fleak.

Detroit Sun FC are fighting for top spot of the UWS Midwest Division, currently 4-1-3 in the league. They close out the season with two home matches on July 2 versus Fort Wayne United and on July 9 against Toledo Villa. Both games are at Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac, Michigan kicking off at 4pm. Admission is $5. All kids get in free and receive a free scarf upon entry.
