The rumours started flying around the net of a possible match between England and the USA! Excitement and anticipation started to grow as we waited to hear if the 2nd April meeting between the two International teams would go ahead.

It was a very happy moment when I checked Women’s Soccer United and Biljana had posted the story I had been waiting for ‘USA coming to London…

Not only is it a great match to play for both teams before the World Cup but also in my opinion it is a great way to generate interest, publicity and excitement surrounding women’s football in England which will hopefully help promote the brand new Women’s Super League which will kick of just nine days after the International friendly.

So what do we know about the history of the 2 sides meeting?

As far as I know, it will be the first time that the US women’s National team have played on English soil! Which is pretty surprising. The last time the two sides met was at the China 2007 World Cup. USA delivered the knockout blow to England when they defeated them in the Quarter-finals 3-0.
Since this meeting I think the game has developed for both USA and England and the result, I think will be a more evenly matched contest.

Although the meeting on the 2nd April is an International friendly I think it is going to be a very competitive match. This will be the first chance that England have had to get even with USA! It will also be a great opportunity for both sides to test themselves before the World Cup in Germany. I am hoping that the atmosphere will be electric, I think this could be a match that attracts the high number audience the English womens game needs.

Players will be competing for bragging rights, as WPS teammates will now be playing against each other!

So set your diarys for 2nd April, and don’t worry if you cannot make the match as ESPN2 are very kindly broadcasting LIVE (so no mad rush trying to find a live stream)!

More on this story to follow soon.. But in the meantime it all comes down to a simple question…

Who will win, England or USA?
