The +15,000 Challenge, a chance to make history:
Can ACF Fiorentina attract a strong crowd of home and away supporters to the second leg of their UWCL fixture against Chelsea?
The stadium has a total capacity of 43,138 and is a fantastic venue to host the return leg against strong opposition Chelsea Women. Both Fiorentina and Chelsea Women boast a squad full of top international players including ACF Fiorentina’s Lana Clelland (Scotland), Ilaria Mauro (Italy) and Chelsea Women’s Fran Kirby (England), Ramona Bachmann (Switzerland), Ji Soyun (Korea Republic), Ali Riley (New Zealand), overall too many to mention.
Chelsea Women travel to the Franchi Stadium with a 1-0 lead on aggregate. Karen Carney scored the only goal in the first leg from the penalty spot. It is fair to say that Chelsea created a lot more chances in the opening leg but ACF Fiorentina’s goalkeeper Stéphanie Öhrström put in a superb performance to help keep the scoreline at 1-0.
This puts ACF Fiorentina in a great position for the second leg, playing in front of their home crowd. The Italian club need to score but have to be careful not to concede an away goal to Chelsea which will make the task of advancing to the next round even more difficult.
Field of Dreams:
Fiorentina Women’s FC is making this game their mission to help women athletes (of all sports) become recognised as professionals in Italy!
In Italy, currently all women in competing sports are under the tutelage of the Amateur league, which means women athletes, even at the top levels, are under the amateur status nationally.
Fiorentina Women’s FC has made it their mission to change the status of women athletes here in Italy to PROFESSIONAL!!!
The Italian women’s football club have made history previously when ACF Fiorentina became the first ever professionally affiliated women’s football club in the history of Italy!
This groundbreaking move paved the way for other clubs to follow in their footsteps and they have inspired 8 out of 20 professional Serie A teams to create their own women’s divisions.
Help Fiorentina Women’s FC achieve their goal by attending the match!
