FIFA plans World Women’s League of Selections from 2020
FIFA plans to organize a Women’s World League of Selections starting in 2020. The idea is for an elite division, with 16 members, and four other regional divisions – Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia / Oceania. The tournament would be annual.
The elite must have four participants from each of the divisions, and the regional tournaments would serve as qualifiers, with the worst of that major division being downgraded to local games.
The World League format details will be discussed during FIFA Council meetings this week in Bogota, Colombia.
The plan, which had been launched in May last year by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, is now taking shape. The organization’s leadership believes that creating an annual calendar is the best way to force federations and clubs to invest in women’s football.
“We cannot leave 50 percent of the population off the field, that’s not true,” said Infantino last year when he launched the idea during the FIFA Congress in Bahrain.
