FIFA Women’s World Rankings 28th September 2018

What I find strange about the FIFA Women’s World Rankings every time there are announced…
Why have the rankings been out 4 times a year Nnormally ?
Why has it been the USA or Germany who are mainly ranked number 1 almost all the time ?

The Women’s World rankings should, in my view, be done once a year from January 1st to December 31st and should be announced the first week in January. And, only the games played in that year should be counted, not keep rolling over the points year after year.

But, the Question has to be who really is the best Country?

The problem I have is that most teams do not play the same amount of games as each other, so the team that plays more International games will always get the most points, and if for Example a team in the top Ten decides to play against a lot of teams in the bottom half of the rankings? Yes they will mainly win the game and gather more points. So for me personally I take the FIFA Rankings with a pinch of salt because it is not a true reflection as to who is the Best.

The FIFA Women’s World Rankings for football were introduced in 2003 with the first rankings published in March 2003.

FIFA Women’s World Rankings are based on every international match a team ever played, dating back to 1971, the first FIFA-recognized women’s international game between France and Netherlands.

FIFA Women’s World Rankings are implicitly weighted to emphasise recent results.

FIFA Women’s World Rankings are only published four times a year. Normally, rankings are released in March, June, September and December. (In World Cup years, dates may be adjusted to reflect the World Cup results.)

To date Germany and the USA have been the only two teams to have led the rankings. They have also held the top two spots in all but five releases, when Germany was ranked third: Norway was in second position in the first two rankings until Germany overtook them by winning the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup,

Brazil was ranked second in March and June 2009 until Germany won 2009 Euro and rejoined the top two, and England reached Number two in March 2018.

The USA holds the record for the longest period being ranked first almost 7 years, from March 2008 to December 2014.
