Fiorentina Women’s FC makes history again! Onwards to Champions League

Following ACF Fiorentina’s leadership to create a professional women’s division in 2015, the Fiorentina Women’s Football Club became the first ever professionally affiliated women’s football club in the history of Italy.

The Fiorentina Women’s FC has won 1 Serie A Championship title (2016-2017), and two Coppa Italia Championship titles (2016-2017, 2017-2018). They have also qualified for the prestigious Champion’s League Competition for two consecutive years (2017-2018, 2018-2019).

The successes of the Fiorentina Women’s FC has since inspired 8 out of 12 professional Serie A teams to create their own women’s divisions. The development in women’s football has been gaining momentum and inspiring development and recognition on a national level. The women’s Serie A league has now been moved from the amateur league, Lega Nazionale Calcio Amatoriale to the professional league, Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio in August 2018.

Progress for women’s football in Italy is not restricted to just the club development, it is seen in the media also. Sky and FIGC created a long-term agreement to broadcast matches from the highest Italian women’s football league.
