Foord scores hat-trick in Australia win
Arsenal’s January signing Caitlin Foord scored a hat-trick for Australia on Friday morning as they saw off Chinese Taipei 7-0 in their first Olympic qualifying game.
The opening goal came nine minutes in when Caitlin Foord raced on to Kyah Simon’s ball and clipped the ball past Chinese Taipei ‘keeper Chen Si Yu.
She added her second quickly after as Emily van Edgmond slotted the ball through with a no-look pass from the edge of the box. Foord then skipped around the goalkeeper to slot the ball into the empty net.
Steph Catley then added the third as she made a darting run behind the defence following a fantastic ball from Van Edgmond to stay composed and slot the ball into the net.
Foord then completed her hat-trick in the 38th minute as van Egmond, teed up the new signing and she fired the ball low into the net.
It was the Matildas who continued the second half on top and they scored their fifth when Evertons January arrival Hayley Raso danced her way into the box before rounding the keeper and slotting the ball into the net.
Chelsea’s superstar arrival last month Sam Kerr didn’t start the game but she came on in the 61st minute and three minutes later she had the ball in the net for 6-0 when she was played in by Chloe Logarzo before slotting beyond Chen Si Yu.
Foord was then replaced with 15 minutes to go after an outstanding performance and she certainly impressed her new fans in North London who tuned into watch.
The scoring was complete in the final minute as Katrina Gorry volleyed home from eight yards after the keeper deflected a cross in her direction.
Foord and the Matildas will be continuing their qualifying campaign on Monday as they take on Thailand.
