Houston Dash lead the NWSL after match day 1

Sky Blue FC opened its 2016 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season in thrilling fashion on Sunday night, handing two-time defending NWSL Shield winner Seattle Reign FC its first-ever home loss at Memorial Stadium (unbeaten there over previous two seasons), 2-1.

Scoring first in the contest was Hawaiian striker Tasha Kai in her return to the professional game, while midfielder Kelly Conheeney hit the game-winner in the second half. The match was the professional debut for Conheeney, who was invited into Sky Blue FC preseason camp after attending open tryouts just over a month ago, not only earning an eventual roster spot but also a starting nod on Sunday.

Portland Thorns 2 – 1 Orlando Pride

Attendance: 16,073

Portland Thorns FC opened the 2016 NWSL season by defeating visiting Orlando Pride 2-1 in front of 16,073 fans at Providence Park on Sunday night.

Orlando opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Pride defender Steph Catley’s free kick from just outside the box beat Thorns FC goalkeeper Michelle Betos.

The Thorns, however, equalized in the 25th minute. Forward Nadia Nadim headed a Lindsey Horan cross into the path of Tobin Heath who sent the ball across the face of goal to the waiting feet of midfielder Dagny Brynjarsdottir. Brynjarsdottir made no mistake with her finish, blasting her shot past Pride goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris.

In the 82nd minute, the Thorns sealed the match 2-1 when Lindsey Horan calmly finished a pass from Heath into the lower corner of the goal.
