Harambee Starlets shot stopper Vivian Akinyi thrilled with clean sheet
Harambee Starlets shot stopper Vivian Akinyi says she is happy after posting a clean sheet in the ongoing Cecafa women tournament at the Technical Centre, Njeru Uganda.
Akinyi, the first choice goalkeeper for the national side played the first two matches where her team picked 4-0 against the hosts, Crested Cranes and the same results (4-0) against Burundi but she was not used in the third match against Zanzibar where they won 11-0.
Samantha Akinyi was on duty in that huge margin win to enable Kenya keep the unbeaten record and top Group A with six points from three matches.
Akinyi says the tournament has been good for her and she hopes to continue with good performance to make sure she doesn’t concede by the end of the tournament.
“I am happy for what we have done as a team so far in the tournament. I was shaky as we started our match against Burundi because I was a bit scared of the many goals they scored in their previous match but as the game continued I gained my confidence and played the match comfortably. It is possible to expect more clean sheets because we have a good team and the defense has always done well,” she said.
Akinyi debuted for the national team in 2015 during an international friendly match against Kilimanjaro Queens where the teams forces a one-all draw and since then she has improved immensely resuming as the first choice goalkeeper for the national side.
“I am happy because the coach has confidence in me and I will always play my best to prove my worth. It is not easy because we have very good goalkeepers in Samantha and now the youngster in the team Lilian Awour. Hard work and patience has always worked for me,” she said.
