Republic of Ireland drawn in Group B of UEFA WU17 Championships
The Republic of Ireland have been drawn in Group B of the UEFA WU17 Championships with France, Switzerland and Norway.
Dave Connell’s side qualified for the finals in dramatic fashion earlier this month and are looking forward to competing in the tournament in Iceland, which begins on June 22.
Ireland are due to meet France in their first game in Kópavogur then meet the Swiss on June 25 in Reykjavík before concluding the group stages against the Norwegians in Kópavogur on June 28.
The top two sides from each group progress to the semi-finals. Connell and his coaching staff led the Republic of Ireland to the semi-finals of the UEFA WU19 Championships in Norway last summer.
Ireland assistant coach Dave Bell was at the draw in Reykjavik today. “We’re quite happy with how the draw went as the other group looks extremely tough. I saw France draw with England recently and it was a draw. They don’t know much about us, we know the Swiss from last year at U16s and we know Norway well from recent years.
“We’ll go there to do our best and think we’ve a bit of a chance. We’re hoping we can do as well as the U19s did last year but these teams all very good. The Swiss were the top scorers in qualifying so we know the challenge there.
“A lot of the girls will be having exams ahead of the finals so we’ll have to organise things so that they don’t clash and we’ll chat to the leagues to see if we can access the players at weekends in preparation.
“We’ve seen the stadiums and training facility today. Everything looks top class here and we’ve been well looked after already. Iceland look like they’ll have everything organised extremely well.”
